Because UD is running, my laptop no longer goes on standby or hibernation mode.
Is it possible to change this? |

Hello louiepk,
Laptops go into standby mode after running idle for a while. Your laptop will never go idle while you are running the WCG application unless you set a schedule in your device profile saying when it is not supposed to run. You can always shut down by unplugging since the UD client will only run while your laptop is plugged in to electrical power. Alternatively, you can right-click on the icon and select 'Exit'. In that case, it would be a good idea to put a duplicate link to WCG on your desktop from your Startup folder so you can manually restart the program without rebooting. Lawrence |

----------------------------------------Members wrote up several posts how to properly configure the hibernation and how to force it after X time of user-idle status http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/general/hibernate.cfm. Lawrence's UD agent scheduling feature can be set in the My Grid, Device Manager, Device Profile here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to find a way to make UD or BOINC not be considered user activity so that after a certain idle period, Standby or Hibernation would kick in.

There's always some answer lurking....this one for those with very rich memory fittings on their laptop:
---------------------------------------- Microsoft Windows XP and Hibernation Failure So today I discovered why my notebook was failing to hibernate when I closed the lid on Windows XP, thanks to Scott Hanselman. Scott's article can be found here. The bug affects all computers that had more than 1GB of RAM. Microsoft finally released a hotfix to the problem here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909095 Why did Microsoft wait so long to release this to the public? It appears they had this available for awhile, but you had to call PSS to get it. ----- Rom Windows XP Monday, October 09, 2006 4:31:53 PM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)

louiepk, you have made a fundamental error: computers do not go into standby depending on user activity. They go into standby when the computer itself is doing nothing.
BOINC works in almost the opposite way: it can be configured to work only when there is no user activity, and of course, it always only works when the computer is doing nothing (using the idle cycles). You need to decide how you want your computer to behave. Then we'll find an answer for you. For now, I suggest you shut your computer down properly. |
