I have been told there is a new Beta Folding@Home client release that allows you to use ATI 19xx series graphic cards to accelerate your processing of protein folding by 20 to 40 times. Does anyone have any details on this client development? Like when it will be able to use more common video cards? How far off is Linux support?
From what I understand it is the 48 bit pixel shader in the card that makes it even possble. Anyway a 20x increase in processing power would be very nice boost for WCG.... -Melchior ![]() |

Why don't you ask the Folding@Home folk?
Or, of course, you could read one of the many other discussions on the subject we have had here already. |

Hi Melchior2,
----------------------------------------http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34783 For more news, start looking at http://folding.stanford.edu/ Lawrence Added: F@H has been working on this since mid-2004, but they have had a NonDisclosure Agreement that has kept them from discussing many details. I suspect that they can start disclosing now, so the next few months should bring a lot of posts. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 4, 2006 12:15:59 AM] |

Well DPC-F@H team has some frontiermen(or cows if u like) and the message is mixed.....one of them is to shorten the life of the GPU by a considerable amount / challenging cooling/noise ratio issues....you can always wear these new-fang negative feedback sound suppressors u see on planes.

Hello XS_Martijn,
Is anything like this also going to happen for WCG? That would be awesome I am pretty sure that nobody will compete with Folding@Home for a while. They have put out a lot of effort to acquire a small group of computers. Anybody else would have to put a programming team to work for a year to split that small group. In other words, I feel sure that people will delay until the programming tools look easier and the potential number of contributors is much larger. Lawrence |

I am pretty sure that nobody will compete with Folding@Home for a while. .... I don't know about that. I think we can at least try to compete. Lets see what happens when we kick it into high gear... -Melchior ![]() and ![]() |

No. Really. WCG are very busy right now, and are working flat out to support the platforms they do.
I suppose if someone (with funding) were to approach the Rosetta or AutoDock developers, that would be the fastest route to a major gfx card deployment on WCG. It would still take a year or two, though. |

Using the Gfx is not the only way to compete, and in the end what really matters is the work that gets done.
So we just have to do more work... -Melchior |
