I cannot delete a thread if it has existed longer than 24 hours !!!

knreed.

Thanks again for the update to the FAQ's

However, I have another problem - I cannot delete threads that I consider are well past their sell by date even though I created them as they have existed for longer than 24 Hours!!

I posted a couple of threads to provoke a response from IBM/WCG to join us in the forum and they have now outlived their ironic value. Unfortunately I cannot delete them , with forum administrators appointed these threads should have been deleted almost immediately. However they now have a life of their own over which I have no control.

Please could you increase the timeout on the forum so that a thread can be deleted by it's creator after any length of time?

In the meantime could you do me a really big favour and delete threads, 577,662,797,801,802,822 and finally 847?

The forum is now in serious need of Moderators that have admin access to the threads to stop flame wars, posts with foul language, multiple forum posts and the proliferation of "Me too" and "What he said" type posts which just clutter up what should be a forum full of help and advice.

I realise that you and the team cannot watch over proceedings 24/7 but I am sure there are individuals out there, including myself, who would be happy to help - members from around the world that could provide 24 hour support.

On the subject of Tech support would it be possible to publish a timetable of sorts that would let members know when the WCG Tech team would be available on the forum. This would lessen the frustration of there being no reply to what as a member you think is an important post - the reality being that the team are performing all the back office tasks that are needed to run this project. If members knew that the team is only available for a couple of hours Friday and then a couple of hours on Monday for example then I'm sure all members would be happy to wait for your responses.

As a suggestion would it be possible to set up live chat session on the website so that we could "talk" directly to the team on a one off type basis.

I am sure members have many questions about the project, how it is run what infrastructure you have running the project at IBM, that kind of thing. I would like to "talk" to scientists such as rbonneau from ISB about his research - just an idea.

I'm going to take a break from the forum for a couple of days, go to bed at a normal hour, and re-gain my sense of humour.

Thanks to all the Team at WCG, Alther, Gridboy1, Admin, Viktors, yourself
and all those hidden behind the scenes for setting up this project.

I'll be back on the boards at the weekend.

Regards

Dave

cool Re: I cannot delete a thread if it has existed longer than 24 hours !!!

Well Cap'n, I am glad to see that I'm not alone. The implied ability to delete recent posts kept me timorously hiding my ignorance. As far as I can remember from reading the mvnForum Administration / User Documentation only a Moderator can delete a post. For everyone without Moderator permissions, the Delete command is shown in brackets. Non-Moderators have to request intervention by a Moderator or else Edit their post, replacing the former message with '-- Deleted --' or something of the sort. And the Documentation states that members are only allowed to Edit their own post for one week.

Re: I cannot delete a thread if it has existed longer than 24 hours !!!

Help me I'm addicted to reading forum posts.

Hi Lawrence and Capt Crunch
I'm sure I managed it once - maybe you can only do this if nobody replies?
I posted a thread saying the forum is changing as options on the toolbar just disappeared one day. Then it was just getting in the way so I was presented with the delete option next to post a reply to this thread one mouse click later - gone. My moral boosting 64.77 terflops has turned into a flame war and there's nothing I can do to stop it + there's the other 2 posts that are no longer amusing (if they ever were). Somebody else decides to post a reply and there they are back in the number one spot.

As I say we need moderators, I would volunteer, and I know of others that would be excellent at the job mentioning no names.

Keep Posting

Dave

Re: I cannot delete a thread if it has existed longer than 24 hours !!!

I guess in the absence of a moderator to delete, lock, and move threads and reprimand bad behavior, the forum needs to be self moderating. Kind of fits with the whole world community concept I guess. So, for now it's up to members to speak up and help keep the forums clean and friendly.

It's nice to have a good clean orderly forum, but it's not a high priority. I am more interested in having the staff work on that client upgrade I read about in a thread here that will speed up crunching and improve/reduce memory usage. I think time should be spent on that before something for the forums.

Ultimately a good idea though, I just don't see where things are all that bad.
