Reading the mvnForum Administration Documentation, I have come across two interesting points:
1) Build Searching Index mvnForum provides a comprehensive set of search features that enable the user to find posts by author, post topic, and date. The search features are supported by Jakarta's Lucene project. Lucene builds an index configured by mvnforum which speeds user's searches of the forum content. To rebuild the index, click on the Rebuild Searching Index. I have been having problems with the advanced SEARCH function, which seems to miss many posts. Is this a software bug? Or does the Searching Index need Rebuilding? 2) Rank Management Ranks are a catchy way to categorize forum users based on the amount of their participation. Use the rank management to set the participation thresholds for how many forum posts a user must participate in to achieve a new ranking. By default, mvnForum installs with 4 ranks, Stranger (less than 20 posts), Newbie (less than 50 posts), Member (less than 100 posts), and Advanced Member (more than 100 posts). You can edit these thresholds and add new ones. Edit Rank - Change the minimum number of posts or the title of the ranking. Add new Rank - Enter a minimum number of posts and the rank title to create a new ranking. I think that the Ranks need renaming. Stranger is too cold. After all, we are trying to enroll new members. And I hope we end up with a million members who do not feel compelled to ask frequent questions. Off the top of my head, why not: New Member Member Talkative Member Very Talkative Member Well, I can see some problems with that. For one thing, it might irritate someone to be called a New Member if they have been a silent Member for years and finally have run into a problem. Anybody with some good ideas? [Note – All of us have plenty of BAD ideas] If so, please add to this thread. Lawrence |

I agree that "Stranger" could be a put off to some people, but it also could be incentive to some people to post more to get rid of it as a rank. I think in this forum, post count derived ranks do not matter, the only distinction that is important is that between participant and staff. It would be OK with me if rank was just removed for all but the project staff. I would like to have an avatar option, but it's not a big deal and I'm sure the staff have more important things to do than worry about how to implement and police an avatar policy.
if you do want post count derived rank, then how about 1-19 * 20-49 ** 50-99 *** 100-499 **** 500+ ***** that way it is multilingual ![]() |

How about using these for Forum designations
(1) New Member up to 20 posts (2) Regular Member up to 50 posts (3) Seasoned Member up to 100 posts (4) Very Seasoned Member over 100 posts (5) Forum God over 500 posts ![]() ![]() Regards |

Graham --
Don't we really already have Forum God's, but not by virtue of number of posts, but by their value and quality. I am speaking, of course, of the designation of Community Admins which our team mates Lawrence and David have. |

Graham --
Mine was in jest too and I really thought yours was as well -- as I explained in another thread, this probably relates to the differences in our time zones -- LOL ![]() |
