Hi all,
This is my first post in this forum ever since I've become a WCG member since a month ago. I must say that this forum is really good and informational. Cheers to the team who manages this forum! Well, I've been trying to search for technical information on how to install the UD Grid Agent in computers connected via LAN (e.g. campus network), but I couldn't really find any info which is useful enough to assist me in this matter. Perhaps anyone can post the thread url here so that I can go and read more about LAN installation of UD? I'm currently doing a research on Grid technologies worldwide, and I came across World Community Grid. I downloaded and installed the grid agent on my laptop and have been contributing my cpu resources and idle time ever since. Right now, I've a proposal to make to my university: Hook up all idle computers in the campus network to the Grid. That is to say, I'd like to propose to my university's I.T.Dept. to install the grid agents on the campus PCs (and convince them as well). The problem I'm facing now is that I don't have enough technical information on installing the grid agents in a LAN environment. The campus PCs are either running on Windows 2000, Fedora Core 5, Red Hat Linux or Mandrake Linux. My questions are: 1. Do I install the grid agent in the server or install in each individual PCs? 2. To use a campus PC, a student needs to login with his/her username and password. Then later, he/she logs off the PC. In a LAN environment, does the grid agent "run" all the time? Does it only run when a student is logged in? Or, does it also run when a student is logged off from the PC? 3. Is there a "LAN package" grid agent? If there is, is it configurable to suit the needs of a LAN network? 4. What does it means by "Become a Partner" of WCG? If my university is interested to become a partner of WCG, does that mean that my university will "pledge" to contribute idle CPU resources and time (LAN computers) to the WCG projects? 5. Are there any critical security issues that I should be aware of? I'm really interested in deploying the grid agent in my campus network so I'll need those basic info to be included in my proposal. I'd appreciate if anyone can provide those info to me.......*thanks* kimberrr |

The best solution is to use BOINC. You will need BOINC anyway, for the Linux computers.
BOINC can be set up to run as a service, so it is undisturbed by users logging on and off. The agent needs installing on each computer, but fortunately it can be rolled out using whatever network installation system your campus uses. In particular, it can be installed over a domain using Group Policy. We can help you create an installer transform that will customise the installation to your needs. Linux installation should be even easier, since it's a simple file copy. The partnership pages explain exactly what commitment is required - while you don't have to contribute any computing power, most partners do their best to contribute what they can. However, your university can become a partner now, and set up the grid in their own time. I suggest you read the partner presentation, then include it in your presentation to your university. Aim high: if you can get the Chancellor or someone on board, then you won't have to worry about convincing anyone else. And finally: if your university is serious about this, then they will get all the direct assistance from the WCG techs that they need. Once they apply for partnership, they will have direct email and phone contact with all the experts. The security of the grid is guaranteed by IBM technology. All server communication is encrypted. However, you run the software at your own risk. |

Hello kimberr,
You might want to look at the thread 'Automating the deployment of BOINC Agent' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=5792 Lawrence |

Thank you Didactylos & lawrencehardin! Your replies are superb, now I have a clear idea on installing the grid agent in a LAN environment. Plus, thanks for the tips too It's best to convince the higher authorities about this issue. Thank you thank you once again...hopefully I'll get the green light from my university to donate the cpu resources and time in WCG's humanitarian projects...
