So I now see. I hadn't picked up on it because BOINC hasn't added those new options to their help page yet:
----------------------------------------Advanced Options: opens a dialog allowing you to select your preferred language, how often you wish to be reminded of the need to connect to the project servers (for dial-up users), etc. If you connect to the web through an HTTP or SOCKS proxy, use this dialog to enter its address and port. Windows only: use this dialog to tell BOINC your method of connecting to the Internet. Select Computer: Allows you to control BOINC on a different computer Run Benchmarks: run benchmark functions, which measure the speed of your processor. BOINC does this automatically, but you can repeat it whenever you want. The results are shown in the Messages tab. Retry Communications: retry any deferred communications. add "Read config file" here --> add "Read local prefs file" here -->

To work on the rosy complexion, BOINCview has a screen to set many of these parms in a screen and even tells from which BOINC version they work. Sample in second post of the thread Lawrence posted link to. No manual file editing required and setting which are no longer 'default' in bold

Hmmm. more interesting comparisons. --- Boincview has a "yes" in there for checkpointing on that screenshot, and the manual file edit (and the boinc help) must use a value of "1" to indicate "yes".

0=no, 1=yes.
----------------------------------------Here's something I didn't expect. Checkpointing on a 0.5GHz Intel computer is still coming in at every 10 minutes on the same project, about the same as the AMD64 2.4 GHz. 5/10/07 3:03:14 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result 10000396-10001836_0 checkpointed 5/10/07 3:13:55 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result 10000396-10001836_0 checkpointed 5/10/07 3:24:04 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result 10000396-10001836_0 checkpointed 5/10/07 3:34:09 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result 10000396-10001836_0 checkpointed 5/10/07 3:44:12 PM|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result 10000396-10001836_0 checkpointed

Boolean, dudes and dudettes. Boolean.
Yes, the Genome Comparison project checkpoints every 10 minutes, like clockwork. I suppose theoretically it could do an extra checkpoint when it is asked to shut down. It is the only project we have that checkpoints so easily, though. All the rest are more constrained by the algorithm. |
