Is Checkpointing better with HPF2 WU's

Note I have already read a number of threads disscussing checkpointing with FAAH workunits. We don't need to go over that again.

I have just installed the UD windows agent that automatically downloaded a FAAH workunit that is being crunched at the present time. It looks like it will take about 8 or 9 hours to complete on my 1.7 Ghz AMD processor.

MY PROBLEM
I live in Florida. We have thunderstorms. I turn my computer off when I hear thunder, or I leave the house. I also turn it off at night. I turn it off about every three or four hours on average. I have decided that cruching FAAH WU wastes an excessive amount of my computer power.

Question
I was running Rosetta@Home on BOINC and losing about 10 - 20% of my crunch time due to checkpointing. Could somebody give my a wild guess as to what I will lose running HPF2?

Jack

Would you belive that I hear thunder inthe distance and the FAAH WU is at 31%

Hi stewjack,

Reads like the "Hibernation" manual written by DavidHobbs is the answer to your loosing time......would equate to zero seconds loss even with FAAH.

Re: Doesn't save if I pull out the power supply before I turn off laptop

The Desktop setup would be same as Laptop

ciao

PS, HPF2 was suspended due a difficult to find bug in science algorithm problems....Help Defeat Cancer is less long and has segment saves each 25% (the present batches)

Re: Is Checkpointing better with HPF2 WU's

HPF2 (like HPF1) uses Rosetta (exactly the same codebase they are developing at the Rosetta@Home project).

Because it is doing higher resolution modelling, HPF2 checkpoints less frequently than HPF1. However, you won't normally find work units like the FAAH units that have very few (or no) checkpoints. All HPF2 work units should checkpoint reasonably frequently (I forget the exact details).

HPF2 is on hiatus, as Sekerob mentioned. It will be back soon.

Thank you Didactylos and Sekerob. I think that hibernation is too complicated a task to perform every time I wish to leave the house. I will wait until HPF2 is fixed.

sad

Re: Is Checkpointing better with HPF2 WU's

HPF2, HDC and FAAH don't have very many checkpoints. On the other hand, I am finding that the whole HDC workunits don't take nearly as long as the FAAH to finish. On the same 2.4GHz AMD computers here, FAAH runs about 5 hours. HDC completes in 1.5 to 2 hours. There would be less waste after restarting a computer. Yes, the previous projects had a lot more checkpoints.

If you want to get extreme, several of the other BOINC projects have workunits that are small or even tiny. Some only run a few minutes. Rectilinear Crossing is one of the smallest. Most workunits run in less than a minute and a few long ones are up to 20 minutes. Several of the shortest here completed in TWO SECONDS. They don't even bother computing a percentage of completion. It's either 100% or nothing. On the other hand, the project can not keep everyone busy and is down itself for much of the time.
