Re: merging hosts

Make that 13 installs that show up for me when I have only 5.
I have 110 and have only 4 active computers running BOINC. Each also has an inactive UD device. That's 8 now. Your point is?

Some computers no longer exist. Other devices are part of UDMonitor installations that are no longer running.

If installs were done with different member names, it is always possible to uninstall one attached to a member name that is obsolete. When reinstalling it again, remember to note that the membername you want to use already exists. Both devices will then be associated with the current membername. That's the way my 4 are set up, all with the same member name.

Won't help with merging hosts - time to shut 'em down and ebay 'em!

Why couldn't this (merging hosts) have been done? There's always a new version of Boinc coming out / in the works. Is one that much simpler to do than the other?

Re: merging hosts

OK guys, you can make light of this if you want......... sad

I shall NOT be here in 2008 if it takes that long. In fact, I probably won't be here in mid 2007 if merging still isn't possible by then. tired ".
Why worry about it? I still show 110 devices, but only 4 are active. Most sent something several years ago, and were used in various tests. All device statistics are added into the numbers for my membername, reflecting the total.

In the meantime, we have 3 more projects coming up this year and one more early next year. Cures for diseases is what we are here for. "Points" is only for competion.

It's a funny thing, David_L6 - but sometimes a feature that sounds absolutely trivial is, in reality, a major change requiring all sorts of work. This is one of those cases.

I'm fairly sure all the boring details have been explained in this thread already. So I'll just say, merging hosts has been timetabled by the techs. It will happen. We just need to be patient.

Quite hard to be patient. If it´s timetabled - and not pushed away and away into a later version, as we read before - is this timetable viewable?

I am also in the process of trying to get my small farm of 20 machines merged down from the false list of 80 machines due to (in part) this mess. I really need these per-machine stats to be clean and accurate so I can effectively remotely monitor them.

What is the timeline to get this fixed? The latest BOINC server version is much better at the merging function.

Thanks.

Hi zombie67,

As for BOINC server software, that's not the issue. It's the central database where UD and BOINC is held together. Encouraging is that since the swap of BOINC client being put on top of the download page, the fast majority of new installs is on BOINC, leaving just around 1/5th to UD.

Seen you in threads where BOINCview was being discussed, so dont need to tell you what's on offer in terms of real time host management and monitoring etc in that tool including views of host credits, cpu efficiency and whatnot. Am truly ignoring the WCG device statistics pages, this app my premier BOINC client control.

When you have to clean install, make sure to copy certain files like account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml . I just did one last week and the Computer ID remained the same. Even if you ditch a machine and set up a new one, copying these key files across is enough to retain an existing client. Avoid duplicating as you're in with connection troubles.

That's all I have on offer for the moment
