Re: merging hosts

Sorry, 'hosts' generally referred to here as 'devices', cant at present time be merged. WCG has plans for it.....see other posts on this forum on the reasons behind it.

ciao

Re: merging hosts

Hello bartsob5,
Sekerob is right. Right now, we create a unique Device ID for each installation and associate it with a unique Member ID. Once created, the server is forever ready to accept requests forom that Device ID and assign points for results received from that Device ID. The points are always merged under a Member ID. After a few weeks without results, the Device ID is no longer displayed unless the drop down menu is accessed to show the inactive devices.

But there are always requests to create a third level (Computers) and create user commands to assign devices to computers under a member id. Something like this might be done in response to the requests.

Re: merging hosts

In my case, I had to reinstall BOINC twice on one machine. My profile shows 4 machines but I only have 2. Having systems drop off the list for inactivity works but gives an incorrect number of systems. It would be nice to have a means of cleaning the list up.

How many of our current 400,000+ systems are duplicates? Is there a way to display the active number of systems on the global statistics?

Re: merging hosts

Hello geopsychic,
Reworking our Statistics section is one of the things we are trying to do this year. I don't think that merging devices made the list, though. It is a lengthier job than it appears to be.

Re: merging hosts

Yours is a familiar story, geopsychic. I think almost everyone here has had to reinstall for any 1 of several reasons. For example, I have 21 showing in my profile but only 7 in my little weed patch (not a farm).

WCG has hinted they intend to clean out inactive systems and restore accuracy to the count sometime this fall. As I read the wind and interpret the signs (I don't get inside info, just a cruncher like you) it looks like they've almost completed some very important tasks that have been on the burner for a while. I believe it's more a question of manpower and not at all a question of apathy and letting allowing stats to inflate in their favor. Now with the simplified BOINC GUI in beta and looking good so far, I think they'll soon have some manpower to devote to the issue of inactive systems. Or maybe there are other more imporant issues? Anybody read the wind differently?

Re: merging hosts

Any new news on this? I would like to be able to merge hosts so I can clean up some messy host-specific data on boincstats. TIA!

Re: merging hosts

No news. Too much to do, too little time. Don't worry, we know you want it.

Re: merging hosts

Hello zombie67,
I think the date for this keeps getting shoved back as other problems keep getting in the way. It was last year that the estimate was made that the statistics could be revamped in the last quarter of this year. I have not heard anything about this lately. But they are working on so much else that I don't see how it can be done soon.
