sad Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

Hi all,

I registered for WCG, using boinc / windows XP / corporate firewall environment. I already have seti working fine under boinc and communicating in / out perfectly from there (proxy setup in boinc options).

However, WCG starts to install itself fine, but then fails to download what it needs :

17/08/06 15:57:48|World Community Grid|Temporarily failed download of faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_bdb732.pdbqt: http error

I have a list of units (?) waiting in the transfer tab, always failing and waiting to retry :

18/08/06 09:32:54|World Community Grid|Started download of file faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_mx1gnm.pdbqt
18/08/06 09:32:54||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
18/08/06 09:32:55||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

In the WCG boinc project subdirectory on my machine, I see :

17/08/06 17:46 0 faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_AD4_parameters.dat
17/08/06 17:52 0 faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_bdb732.pdbqt
17/08/06 17:54 0 faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_bdb732_mx1gnm_02.gpf
17/08/06 17:59 0 faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02.dpf
17/08/06 17:30 0 faah0763_bdb732_mx1gnm_02_mx1gnm.pdbqt
17/08/06 17:44 0 wcg_faah_autodock_5.10_windows_intelx86

All sizes 0 !

I tried to start / stop all, change calculation status, reset the whole project:

18/08/06 15:02:12|World Community Grid|Resetting project

...

As you can it refuses to get the pieces it needs...

For a test I did install all this at home, with no proxy, because I have a feeling it comes from there (*). It did work, there was several errors at download time but it finally could go though it and started to calculate.

However, seti and predictor are able to communicate well from my office machine, so what the **** !?!?

(*) but I can't let it running home because I only have a 5 years old laptop that really is about to die...

Thanks for your help and suggestions, I already start too much time on this, if I can't find quick I'll have to try another project.

Jerome

PD : the whole reason I wanted to try WCG is that predictor seems to be on hold (no more units distributed) and also I have a brand new machine at the office, Pentium 4 HT 3Ghz (1 CPU + 1 emulated CPU) 1 Gb, so I thought it was time to give more power to the community...

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

Check http://boinc.berkeley.edu to see if you have the latest version of BOINC. There have been a few updates recently.

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

The difference between WCG and SETI/Predictor is that WCG requires a secure connection. Proxies and BOINC still have a little trouble with SSL.

All the latest BOINC versions have included proxy bug fixes. Make sure you have the very latest official version (or you can try the alpha release). Since you have managed to send a scheduler request, it looks to me like a bug we have seen before - one that has been fixed.

If the latest version doesn't help, there are some further steps we can take you through if you have the time and patience.

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

The first problem is perfectly clear. You have too little free space on the harddrive.

To prevent BOINC from taking up the last of your free space, there is a couple of settings related to disk usage. These are: Leave at least: x Gigabytes of disk space free and Use no more than: x % of total disk space.

I suggest you free up some space rather than mess with the defaults.

Let us know if the problem with the other machines persists.

If you'll look at my post again you'll see I have 100GB HD and it has plenty of free space. I ran Rosetta for the past 8 months and I ran WCG about 3 months ago. It ran fine then...

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

Check your preferences. Check how much free space you have. I read your post, but frankly it doesn't matter how big your drive is - it can easily be nearly full. Remember that BOINC uses the partition it is installed on. If you have more space on a different drive then you should reinstall BOINC on that drive.

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

Hi Nite Owl,

Second error cant help u there, but on first, the situation is that each Project web site has its BOINC Profile page. The one at Predictor might say that allowed space is much lower than at WCG. If u last visited predictor then hooked any of the 5 problematic machines up, it will copy the last modified BOINC profile, thus possible the Predictor overwrote the WCG prefs on your local machine. Have a go and re-save the BOINC profile at WCG, set it to 1gb at least, save it. Call up the Project tab in BOINC and hit update.....who knows.

ciao

PS My Setting is:

Use no more than: 10.0 Gigabytes

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

I checked the default preferences right after the problem occurred. They're ok. The last project I ran was Rosetta and it uses a grunch of HD drive space to crunch... (Get it? Bunch to crunch? Isn't that a name of a song?) tongue

Re: Windows boinc / WCG unit can't download

Nite Owl, Sekerob, you get a different error message if you go over your maximum allocated space.

Maybe Nite Owl changed the wrong preference - setting Leave at least: x Gigabytes of disk space free to a high value (mistaking it for the Use no more than: x Gigabytes option) would easily cause this error.

But we can easily clarify this: Nite Owl, please will you post the contents of your global_prefs.xml file? This will show us your options and which website was used to set them.
