Hi,
I have a data server running 24/24 at a 1% average load, so that could be a good candidate to run the agent on next to the one on my laptop. A first attempt to get the client to run failed with the message "client paused" and a reference to a webpage on your site (cause.html) that was empty. Before spending days trying to solve this, I'd like to know if anybody has experience running the agent in a similar configuration. I'm running Windows Server 2003 SP1 Small Business Edition on a Dell SC420 with an Intel Celeron at 2.53Ghz. Thanks in advance! Marc |

Hello MPCevat,
Here is the correct Cause webpage ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewCause.do ). BOINC ( http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ ) has much better error messages though it is not as simple as the UD client. WCG offers you a choice so that you can pick the client that works best for you. Lawrence |

Hi,
Thank you for your quick response. I'm afraid though this webpage did not help me out. I have some inconsistent results, so maybe the following information might be helpful to get me any further: - I successfully installed the client - Then I log on using the same member name and password as on my laptop - The client shows messages saying it sends and then receives some 900k of data; the firewall and proxy settings do seem to allow communications - My statistics (points and run time) do show up on the main screen, so it indeed found the proper information on your systems - The second device also shows up on the "My Grid" page, so it was able to store some data on your server too - It then pauses and never starts I tried the suggested solution on that webpage to force it to communicate. It goes through the send/receive cycle again and then pauses too. I hope this works. If not, I at least will have then laptop running some 15 hrs per day. Marco |

Since it appears that some successful communication is going on, let's run through the normal reasons for the agent to pause.
Most common is a problem with the selected projects and minimum requirements. HPF2 has been put on hiatus for a while, so the only projects running on the grid are FightAIDS@Home and Help Defeat Cancer. Do you have both of these selected in your profile? If you only have HDC selected, then there are two possibilities. HDC requires a very large amount of physical memory (750 MB) before it will run at all. Then, even if it does run, there is a chance that there will be no work at any given time. This is because work units need a lot of lab work and preprocessing before they are put on the grid, and the project scientists can only provide a certain amount every day. If you have FAAH selected, and you have more than 250 MB of physical memory (installed memory MINUS any used as shared memory by your video driver) then we will have to look into this further. |

It sounds like you've done everything right except select which projects you want the laptop to work on. On MyGrid, click Device Manager and see if the Device Profile associated with your laptop has any projects selected. If not then that's why you aren't getting any work for the laptop. Remember, the Human Proteome Folding project is on hold so if you select only that project then you still won't get any work. The Help Defeat Cancer project requires minimum 750Meg RAM so if your laptop has less OR if your laptop's video steals some of that RAM then you won't get HDC work either. The Fight Aids@home project has a 250MB minimum RAM requirement. If you meet that requirement then select that project, be sure to click SAVE.

That's 250 MB for FAAH, Dagorath.
I see you're a veteran now. Congratulations... :-) |

Thank you. As my last post demonstrates, the title is based on quantity of posts not quality
I wanted to post the link to the System Requirements page or at least verify the 512 number but couldn't find the link. Now I recall it's behind the Download link. |

It's accessible from the help map as well. All the pages that don't fit into the major navigation scheme are stuck in help.

Link to the System Requirements goes from the download/join/become a member page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

Hello, again,
Thank you for all this information. I checked everything, but got stuck on something else. On the device list on "My grid" two copies of the same system showed up. So first I reinstalled the software under a different machine name to prevent a mix-up there. Did not work. While fiddling around with the software, I found it must be some security setting. When I click "Modify Device Profile" on the preferences screen, the browser opens, but the message "trying to redirect" stays on the screen. When I then go to the home page and try to logon, nothing happens either. I'm not changing the security settings on this machine (its the data server of our company LAN). So I will continue to run the one on M200 only for now. I have asked my partners to run the agent on their laptops too, so some more should be showing up soon. I can't delete the device IDs for "SC420" and "Machine2" from your systems; can you, or will they go away some time soon anyway? Thanks for your help, Marco |
