No finished file...

Hello !

Each time I put my computer in "prolonged standby" mode (so that my computer restart quicker), I receive this message from the BOINC manager :

"Task xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx exited with zero status but no 'finished' file

If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project."

When this happens, the application left in memory exits and my computer has to crunch again from the last checkpoint.
I DON'T have this "problem" with other projects like Rosetta@home or Einstein@home (meaning the application left in memory stays after I restart my computer from "prolonged standby" mode)...

Is this normal ?
Could the techs do something about this ?

Thank you.

Hi duanra,
Are you using BOINC 5.4.9 (or 11)? (This supposedly fixes the Keep in memory bug.)
Does your profile say 'Keep in memory'?

Re: No finished file...

Yes ; I'm currently using BOINC 5.4.9 (not using any Mc Afee software) and I asked in my profile to keep the applications in memory.

The strange thing, in my opinion, is : why does it happen with WGC and not with other BOINC projects ?

Re: No finished file...

I saw this error once in awhile, but do not have my system set to "keep in memory".

One computer has BOINC 5.4.11 on it now, but I haven't seen the error anywhere recently, while crunching HDC and FAAH.

Could it have been more sensitive to Rosettas?

HPF1 is done and HPF2 is on hold for the moment.

Re: No finished file...

I forgot to say that I've got this problem with my 2 computers (running XP) and with all the projects I run (faah and hdc for the moment).

Re: No finished file...

I realize now that the main thing which differs in WGC applications compared to other applications, is the high use of the (virtual) memory :
up to 280 Mb against MAX. 20 Mb for other projects.
Could this explain why the application does'nt stay in memory ?
Because it's too "heavy" ?

Re: No finished file...

G'day Duanra

No finished file can mean a lot of things, but in your case I would guess it has to do with the process of coming out of standby mode. Try a couple of different things - before you put your computer into standby mode suspend the active wu, and then wait until your computer has fully restored itself from standby before resuming it. Try doing a proper full shutdown (instead of standby) and then see if the same problem occurs on restart. If either or both of these solve the problem, then it would appear that it is the way your computer resumes out of standby that is the problem.

I have noticed similar problems with my laptop coming out of standby mode, yes it resumes quicker than a full boot, but different parts of the system come on line before others creating problems until everything is back up.
