Re: Too much cost....

Okay I see.
In fact USA is one of the countries where electricity cost is very cheap. In Japan it's very expensive! crying

Re: Too much cost....

kiyoseki,
Electricity cost can be confusing so it is easy to make a mistake. I am sorry because I was rude in my first post. We are fortunate to have friends from Japan to help us. I also crunch for project TANPAKU from University of Tokyo, another great project :)

Re: Too much cost....

Thank you for your follow up. In my case, especially in summer, I pay more than 400 USD per month for electricity. It made me sensitive about the cost. But I made qite simple mistake with caliculation. However, It is true that when I have joined SETI@HOME, I ran Athron thunderbird 1.2GHz for a month with 24/7 then it cost about 90 USD a month. I have repeated this experiment for a couple of times thus it is sure. Now I know Prescot is more economy than thanderbird. Thanks a lot.

I had an AMD Thunderbird a couple of years ago, and it was a blast furnace so I got rid of it. One of my computers now is one of the newer AMD Venice cores overclocked from 2.0 to 2.4GHz. It runs 6 degrees C cooler than two other 2.4GHz AMD computers here not overclocked. Less heat means less waste.

If your computer is hot, you need more electricity to cool your home in the summer to make up for it. A hot computer will help heat your home in the winter.

The newest computers from both Intel and AMD use only about 37 watts maximum instead of 87 watts. (guess)

Re: Too much cost....

I apologize if this is already a repeat of known facts. If you have an older style CRT monitor instead of a flat screen that is a major consumer of electricity. If you are just crunching, turn off the monitor. Also open the case periodically and blow the dust out, especially off the heat sink on the processor.

I just got my electricity bill for last month. The cost for juice here in Minnesota after adding in all the taxes (ciy, state, etc) and fuel adjustment fees was approx. 11 cents per kwh. The bulk of electricity costs here are for electric hot water heater and small room air conditioner (I prefer fans - cheaper). The marginal cost for running my computer is not great, since the other members of the hamily would be using it anyway.

Our local provider used have the slogan "Electricity is penny cheap."
Not anymore.

Re: Too much cost....

I turn my computer on for ~16 hours a day - I turn it off when I sleep and on when I wake up.
Thus in a 30 day month, it is on for 16 * 30 = 480 hours.
My computer PSU has a peak of 550w, but since using a Intel Conroe - more energy efficient than amdx2, the highest it ever goes is 450w at full load. Without graphics load, it's estimated at 400w. Principally because I overclock my system by 30% (1.4Ghz FSB) and hence have to overvolt every component. And run 4 hard drives, one of which is a 10krpm drive.

0.4 * 480 = 192 kwh
The electricity tariff here is 21.15 cents, or S$0.2115.
0.2115 * 192 = $40.608

Eeps. Good thing I only run 1 system now.

40.61 SGD = 25.78 USD or 20 Euros.

I'm donating $40 to charity every month! :o
While using it for my own self, of course.

Re: Too much cost....

Since I am using computer anyway, udagent makes it use only maxium of 0.07kwh more electricity than withhout it running.
With 10hours day this is 0.7kwh a day this is 30 x 0.7kwh = 21kwh in a month. With prices of 0.2eur /kwh (close to maxium price within europe, a lot of people pay less) this makes total of 4.2eur/5$ month.

This amount is easy to compensate just by turning of tv when you dont really watch it or by changing normal lamps to the energy saving ones etc..

Re: Too much cost....

Let's be as exact about this as possible.

An Intel Pentium-4 Prescott CPU uses about 125 watts when running at 100% usage and (about) 20 watts at idle.

All the other parts of the computer use the same amount of power whetehr the cpu is at 100% utilization or 0%. Sure, if you're using disk a lot, that chews power, but WorldCommunityGrid (WCG) doesn't use that much disk, mostly it's CPU-limited (otherwise the project would just buy a server farm for the disks).

Sure, you can compare the price of having the computer OFF vs. having it run WCG here, but that's silly since you have it on some of the time anyway.

Here in Illinois (we're near Chicago in the USA), we pay summer expensive rates of 8 cents/kilowatt in the winter it's 6 cents/kilowatt.
So, if I average those out I pay about 6.5 cents, since summer only lasts 1/4th of the year. But, since you might live somewhere more expensive, I'll be VERY generous and say you pay 12 cents. NOTE MY COST IN CHICAGO AND MOST OF THE REST OF THE USA IS HALF OF THE BELOW.

Remember above I said the difference in watts between peak and idle is about 100 watts, which is 0.1 kilowatt. Multiply that by the number of:

24 hours in a day=0.1*24=2.4 kwh@$0.12/kwh= $0.288 /month (~29 cents/day).
30 days in a month=0.1*24*30=72 kwh @ $0.12/kwh = $8.64 /month
365.25 days per year=365.25*2.4=876.6 kwh @$0.12/kwh = $105/year

At my house, I pay 6.5 cents/kwh, so my boxes use $52/year each.

I have 5 computers at home - my two kids' boxes (AMD64x3900's), my wife's emac, my 1.2 Ghz athlon, and my new AMD64x2.4200. All are running WCG, and I figure for my taxes that for these 5 boxes, I use an extra $400/year in power running those projects, which might be slightly generous but then when you figure donations to charity it pays to be so.

Look on your power bill for your rate, multiply by about 1000 for the cost, so $0.06 * 1000 = $60.

Since the average US power consumption is about 9,000 kwh, this is a significant fraction of your electrical energy usage. However, it's not really that much in terms of money (source: http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2003/BoiLu.shtml)
