sad Too much cost....

I have measured how much electricity I am spending for grid. My PC has P4-3GHz prescot and 1GB if memory and 1TB of HDD and consuming 200W/H. In my country in my calicuration, it costs about $150 per month if I run the grid 24/7. I may leave the project.

Re: Too much cost....

How did you measure? I don't think you measured anything.The fact that you have used W/H (watts per hour) proves you do not know how to calculate power consumption and cost. Your calculations are wrong.

Hi kiyoseki......maybe try to talk to Suguruhirahara.....he's (also?) from the land of the rising sun and facing the same energy cost as u do. There are quite a few posts here on the cost of computing......gist is, have your PC on when you use it, put it in 'hibernation' ** if your computer allows. This does not loose u a second of work if you crunch 'part-time'. Here on daily basis my PC uses about 4kwh a day which on 24/7 translates to 625 USD per annum. I'm actually using the machine, which i also work from best part of the day, so its probably fair to say, that half the time is exclusive for as somebody phrased it here 'smashing deceases' at Grid Projects like WCG.

Here a link what BerkeleyOINC has got to say on the matter....ignore US pricing from 1991. Energy Considerations

** See DavidHobbs post on how to put computer under Windows into 'Hibernation' mode. wink

Re: Too much cost....

kiyoseki,

My measurements show my 2.4 GHz Athlon also uses about 4 kwh per day running at 100% CPU usage. Your computer will be very similar. Please calculate your cost again using the 4 kwh figure.

I described how I measured my computer's power comsumption in this thread.

try this:

looks closer to $17 USD per month?

Re: Too much cost....

kiyoseki, your calculation sounds unlikely. It means you are being charged about ten times more than me, and electricity here in the UK is not cheap. At most, you might have to pay twice what I do.

But the important thing to remember is that WCG don't ask you to run your computer 24/7. It is enough to just run the grid agent when your computer is normally on. If you want to donate more than this, that is your choice.

Re: Too much cost....

Hello,

Also my computer, with Presler, memory, HDD and video card, consumes very much electricity cost here in Japan.
If you hate to pay much cost, either use conroe and shut down HDDs or run WCG just when you're working on PC.

Re: Too much cost....

What does electricity cost in Japan? I mean what is the cost per kilowatt-hour (kwh)?

Sorry, it was my miscalicuration. With 4.8KWh per day costs only about 27USD per month. Sorry....

Re: Too much cost....

What does electricity cost in Japan? I mean what is the cost per kilowatt-hour (kwh)?

actually it depends with which company you are under contract, but here is a list of the electricity cost plans in Tokyo. It's the most popular for individuals.
    A - If under 120kwh would be used in a month, you will be charged 0.13$ per 1kwh
    B - If from 120kwh to 300kwh would be used in a month, you will be charged 0.17$ per 1kwh
    C - If over 300kwh would be used in a month, you will be charged 0.18$ per 1kwh
Therefore, if 200w(=0.2kw) would be used every day in a month,
    0.2(kw) x 24(h) x 30(d) x 0.17 = 24.48$
It's not very expensive.

To 150$ were charged, I would have to consume,
    X(kw) x 24 x 30 x a = 150 (a = 0.13, 0.17 or 0.18)
    aX = 0.20833...

    If a = 0.13, X will be around 1.6. But 1.6 x 24 x 30 = 1152 > 120(kwh), so a isn't 0.13.
    If a = 0.17, X will be around 1.22 But 1.22 x 24 x 30 = 882 > 300(kwh), so a isn't 0.17, too

    Therefore,
      a must be 0.18
      0.18X = 0.20833...
      X = 1.15738... (1.15 x 24 x 30 = 828 > 300kwh, so a = 0.18)
Therefore I would have to consume around 1.15kw per hour in every day. It's almost impossible for me to consume such a high amount of electricity in a daily life.
