crying ! GUYS ! crying

Just accept that some people are happy to calculate a rough estimate in their head (works for me, probably in another week or so I just won't care anymore) and that others want to know precisely.
Personally, as there is about a 33% chance that I'll miss the switch to a new work unit (Happy 8-hour-a-night sleeper here), I don't see the importance that a few minutes will make.
The flamer wars were a thing of the early 90s. Very unfashionable.

Re: Calculating Length of Work Units

Hi Dave

If i have rattled you, please accept my apology

My responses were tongue in cheek to create a bit of banter

They were never intended to offend you, or any readers of these posts

May we get back to normal

Best Regards

Re: Calculating Length of Work Units

Hi Graham,
It's difficult to judge peoples intentions through the media of text hence our love and use of the smilies in the forum smile

You are never quite sure whether you are having your leg pulled or people are being genuine a wink is the sure way to clear up this confusion.

If you don't mind could you follow the link to the web page below and find my email on the teams web site please could you drop me a mail. You like myself are obviously mad keen on this kind of project maybe we might understand each other better in the forums if we knew what made each of us tick.

Through WCG I now have friends all over the world an aspect you don't get with a true supercomputer smile

I hope you could be one of them

Dave

biggrin Re: Calculating Length of Work Units

I have noticed that progress vs. time is not exactly linear for any particular work unit. When I have done the calculation to estimate the amount of time to complete, it is never accurate. Close, but different enough. (and yes, I am familiar with the math involved) One workunit took 20 hours to get to 50%, but finished in 35 hours, instead of 40 like the math would forecast.

Another thing I have noticed is that it does give a general idea. my current work unit is about 1/8 done after about an hour and a half, which means it will take roughly twelve hours total to complete. The last workunit was about 2% after an hour and half or so, and it took about 60 hours total. If nothing else, early on it does seem to indicate whether I get a quick or slow workuint.

When I did seti@home, it took about 3 hours/workunit, so that was about 8 per day, and it was easier to not worry about the time of any particular workunit. Since we are all just starting out here on the WCG and the workunits can take a lot of time, I find it harder to not keep checking on it.

I knowthese are not really figures in the sense of broken records, but hey I'm doing my two cents thinking thinking thinking
