Wrong Internet connrection showing in devices

In attempt to correct the internet problem below I have changed my adsl connection from ethernet to usb. It is still showing as ethernet in the devices for WCG. Is that OK?

Since I have loaded WCG I have been having trouble with connecting to the Internet. My machine looses its ability to ping even though the router is still connected to the internet. If I reboot the computer the pingable connection comes back. Could it be the WCG software? This problem coincides with my upgrading Winxp to SR2. Is that a known problem of SR2?

Re: Wrong Internet connrection showing in devices

Hi Robin

XP SP2 comes with a firewall that is enabled automatically by Microsoft this may be blocking your pings?

3 questions

1) is the adsl connection direct to the PC via a usb connected modem?
2) are you connecting to your router using 802.11 Wireless connection?
3) what address are you pinging is it out on the internet or is it your local 192.168 network?

n.b. the device profile set on the WCG Website does not have any effect on your connection to the net only the number of points you will receive for each work unit. The agent display under the network button on the home page of the agent occasionally gets it wrong as to which network connection available on your PC it's going to display.

Post back some answers and we'll see if we can progress to a solution

Regards

Dave

The Agent identifies the first network adapter it sees, which is usually the ethernet connection. This is a currently a limitation of the UD software. However, don't worry about it since it's just used for descriptive purposes. Your network score is determined by some small throughput tests so it's using the proper network connection. See the Points System page for a more detailed description on how your machine score is calculated.

The WCG software should not in any way interfere with your network connection. The only time the agent uses the network is to communicate with the server to send results and receive workunits. Even then, it communicates with our servers just like your web browser does.

Your network issues may be caused by SP2. Sounds like a firewall issue and SP2 comes with its own firewall, though I don't know if it's turned on by default or not.

This is not the cause because if I reboot the computer the ability to ping comes back.

Direct

2) are you connecting to your router using 802.11 Wireless connection?

No

3) what address are you pinging is it out on the internet or is it your local 192.168 network?

out on the internet

I have been pinging a full url, but then so has the diagnostic program that comes with the router. When this problem happens it too can not reach the preset test url.

Re: Wrong Internet connrection showing in devices

Robin --

Have you checked to see if your network connection has been disabled by opening the Control Panel (Start - Control Panel) and then clicked open Network Connections (if you have Category View set, you will have to go through Network and Internet Connections first to get to Network Connections). When you get to Network Connections, click open the Local Area Connection (I think the USB connection should show there too -- not positive because this system is ethernet connected). If the Status is anything other than Connected, click the Enable button. If that changes it to Connected, you should now be able to ping away and you need not re-boot. If it did not change to Connected, there is a Repair button on the page under the Support tab you might try. I have never used that, but it is there and might help. This does not, unfortunately, address the underlying issue as to why you are dropping connectivity in the first place. It is probably something XP related or perhaps driver related. If you installed a driver for the USB connection, have you checked to see if there is an updated driver for that? Sorry this is only a guide towards a solution and not the solution to the problem.
