Well, I finally caught a good deal and bought a macpro quad 2ghz (refurb) for 1899.00. Have to sell my mini and g4 powerbook to finance this but couldn't pass it up. Can't wait to crunch with this new toy. Now I have to find something else to sell to up the ram.

Diana G "John, my points per hour are : 29.77. :-)" That's not an Athlon 3200+ running UD is it? David I ran UD for quite a while. I run BOINC now since just before I joined Christians. I'm waiting for the new AMD quad cores. Unlike Intel's 6700 chip, which is 2 dual cores bonded to the same package, the AMD is actually 4 cpu's on the same piece of silicon.
----------------------------------------I've scoured the net looking for some info on when this might be shipping but the best I could find was a comment from AMD's CEO that the Barcelona chips would be out early Q3 - so I'm thinking July. Anybody know anything about this? I'll take rumor, innuendo, speculation or anything else you've got. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just like a 3GHz chip from Architecture A will perform better than a 2GHz but not necessarily a 1GHz of Architecture B, a "glued" CPU will probably be worse than a native one with the same family, but possibly better than a native one of another architecture.

http://www.tcmagazine.com/comments.php?shownews=14580&catid=2 Agena, desktop AMD quad is coming in Q4 (Christmas). Excellent! Thanks for the link. I had researched this a couple of days ago and I guess either Google hadn't caught up or my search criteria weren't any good. The article it quotes is also excellent - see http://www.cpilive.net/v3/inside.aspx?scr=n&NID=1320 There's a lot of speculation over how good the K10's will be. AMD does have a history of developing incredibly efficient architectures so I'm very hopeful. Their interim solution of 2 dual core cpu's on the same motherboard however was disappointing. Other things being equal, Intel might have an advantage when it goes to 45nm but I've seen AMD blow Intel away before and I'm hoping they can do it again. Although if you use their stock price as an indicator, the future is looking pretty bleak. The only thing I have against AMD is that, in my limited experience, it doesn't seem that you can overclock AMD chips by as much as Intel's. The dual core I have now can get about 8% over spec reliably, but an Intel 2.9GHz is cranked to 20% with no problems. ![]() ![]() |

That's just a frontside bus change from 200 to 240 without pushing the voltage. That's 20%. Crunchwise, that contributes about the same as an Intel 3.0-3.2GHz. It even runs cooler than a couple of other 2.4GHz at stock speed, since those are older chips.I want to see what the AMD quad cores will do next year.

I want to see what the AMD quad cores will do next year. Bite your tongue!!! I want my chips this year d@mn-it. I'll buy the Opteron if I have to - except I'll probably get better clock speed if I wait for the desktop chips. If AMD can't get those bad boys out in time for Black Friday, I'm going to be VERY disappointed. I'm using Asus motherboards with the overclocking "AI". I don't have the patience to try multiple voltage combinations. I did set the memory timings manually but that's all I'm prepared to do. I had assumed that the bios was actually stepping up the clock since the POST report displays the correct (oc'd) cpu frequency, but maybe they're just tweaking the FSB and lying to me. I have to say I've had a lot of problems with the Asus AM2 m/b. I've already flashed the bios 3 or 4 times since December. The lastest version seems to have gotten most of the kinks out, but the machine will still sometimes hang for no apparent reason or reboot spontaneously. However that was at an oc increase of 10%. Things seem to be much better now that I've lowered it to 8%. Heat doesn't seem to be a problem though. The cpu has consistently run at around 30 degrees Celsius with only minor variations due to overclocking. Of course the honkin' Zalman heatsink probably deserves credit for that. At this point it's hard to tell what I should blame on AMD, Asus, NVidia, etc. Once AMD has their own integrated chipsets I think the experience will be less "bleeding edge" than it is now. ![]() ![]() |
