I have only just caught up with this thread due to work getting in the way!

I would like to ask everyone to calm down, step away from the keyboard and think about what we are all supposed to be doing here. We are contributing spare CPU cycles to help (hopefully) make the world a better place.

I can fully understand why people are getting hot under the collar but we have to realise that this is a worldwide community. The fact that the US has a law which embargos certain countries is a fact - it is also a fact that other countries in the world have laws which appear to be crazy (The RIP Act in the UK for instance). We just have to live with it at the moment.

There is nothing that we can do (irrespective of numbers here) to change the US law, that can only be done by the constitutional process in the US. There is nothing that IBM can do - they risk the possibility of losing business not only in the US but other countries if they do not conform to this embargo.

What we can do is refrain from making generalisations about people, their motives, politics etc. I have been very lucky to have travelled extensively all over the world on business and pleasure and you just cannot make generalisations about a country/state - you meet good people and bad people in every country in the world.

The Internet is an easy place for personal or ingrained assumptions about a person, state or country to become amplified and echoed continually, with any truth being removed by the repitition. I believe that everyone on this list is capable of mature and reasoned discussion as long as the rhetoric doesn't get in the way.

A community like this can be a great way to foster international relationships, create friendships and empower people to remove embargos such as this. Please lets not waste the opportunity to interact an possibly make the world a better place.
