"Article Date: 28 Apr 2011 The Way Doctors Treat Patients With Cancer And Autoimmune Diseases Could Change Following New Discovery Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta have made an important discovery that provides a new understanding of how our immune system "learns" not to attack our own body, and this could affect the way doctors treat patients with autoimmune diseases and cancer..." |

"Article Date: 29 Apr 2011 MRI Locates Prostate Cancer Recurrence At Extremely Low PSA Levels A pelvic MRI scan with IV contrast and rectal balloon is highly effective in identifying local recurrence even at low PSA values in prostate cancer patients with a rising or persistently elevated PSA after prostatectomy, according to a study presented April 29, 2011, at the Cancer Imaging and Radiation Therapy Symposium in Atlanta. The symposium is co-sponsored by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)..." |

"Article Date: 05 May 2011 Prostate Cancer: More Soy In Diet May Protect Against Deadly Disease Many people often associate the benefits of soy with breast cancer. Indeed, data on soy and prostate cancer has been most promising; many studies support the role of soy in the prevention and possible treatment of prostate cancer. During the late 80s, researchers found that Japanese men in Hawaii who ate tofu at least 5 times per week had 65% less chance of developing prostate cancer than those who ate tofu only once a week or less. In 1998, researchers found that men who drank soy milk at least once a day had a 70% less chance of developing prostate cancer than those who never drank soy milk at all..." |

Breath Test ‘Can Detect Cancer’
An “electronic nose” has been developed that can sniff out cancer in patients’ breath. The device can distinguish between people with the disease and healthy individuals. Scientists believe it may be especially useful for identifying patients with head and neck cancers which are often diagnosed late. |

"Article Date: 10 May 2011 Researchers With UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Discover Way To Amp Up The Power Of Killer T Cells Researchers with UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered a way to amp up the power of killer T-cells, called CD8 cells, making them more functional for longer periods of time and boosting their ability to multiply and expand within the body to fight melanoma, a new study has found. The study, done in mouse models of metastatic melanoma that had spread to the brain, has important clinical implications, as the method could boost the cancer-killing power of experimental immunotherapies being tested now in various cancers, including deadly glioblastoma and metastatic melanoma, both of which are very difficult to treat successfully..." |

"Article Date: 10 May 2011 High Use Of Acetaminophen, Paracetamol, Linked To Blood Cancers High use of acetominophen, a high-selling over-the-counter analgesic or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known in Europe as paracetamol and more commonly in the US as the brand Tylenol, is linked to an almost two-fold increased risk of certain blood cancers, although no such link was found for aspirin, nonaspirin NSAIDs, or ibuprofen, according to a large new study from the US, published online this week in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Although the researchers found that prolonged high use of acetominophen (4 or more times per week for four years or more) nearly doubled the risk of certain cancers involving the blood cells (such as lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS), the risk is still small..." |

"Article Date: 10 May 2011 Exhaustion of tumor-specific CD8+ T cells in metastases from melanoma patients Immune cells known as CD8+ T cells are key components of the antitumor immune response. A team of researchers, led by Daniel Speiser, at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Lausanne, Switzerland, has now generated a gene expression profile of CD8+ T cells in the blood of patients with melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer) and CD8+ T cells in the distant tumors of individuals with melanoma. Surprisingly, the cells in the blood have the characteristics of functional effector cells, whereas the cells in the tumors have the characteristics of exhausted cells that are functionally impaired. The molecular mechanisms underlying the functional impairment of the exhausted CD8+ T cells could provide new targets for anticancer therapies" |

I knew someone who died several years ago of Pancreatic Cancer that would no longer respond to conventional treatment. I post this article in her memory.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/224745.php "Article Date: 10 May 2011 Pancreatic Cancer Stem Cells Effectively Targeted And Destroyed By Oncolytic Viruses Oncolytic viruses quickly infect and kill cancer stem cells, which may provide a treatment for tumors that are resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiation, particularly pancreatic cancer, according to new research from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The findings are especially important since pancreatic cancer has a poor prognosis and is difficult to detect and treat at early stages..." |

"Article Date: 12 May 2011 Genetically Altered Virus Detects Cancers Early Scientists have used a genetically re-engineered herpes virus that selectively hunts down and infects cancerous tumors and then delivers genetic material that prompts cancers to secrete a biomarker and reveal their presence. According to a study appearing May 11 in PLoS (Public Library of Science) ONE, the novel technology has the potential to vastly improve cancer diagnosis by allowing the disease to be caught at much earlier stages and to monitor the effectiveness of therapy..." |
