Fighting Cancer With The Help Of Salmonella
University of Minnesota researchers are using salmonella - the bacteria commonly transmitted through food that sickens thousands of U.S. residents each year - to do what was once unthinkable: help people.

U of M Masonic Cancer Center researchers believe salmonella may be a valuable tool in the fight against cancer in organs surrounding the gut - such as the liver, spleen, and colon - since that's where salmonella naturally infects the body.

Researchers want to "weaponize" salmonella, allowing the bacteria to then attack cancer cells in its natural environment.

U of M trials in animals have already shown salmonella can successfully control tumors in the gut. Human clinical trials are already underway at the U of M and are showing promise..."

Researchers Develop Synthetic Compound That May Lead To Drugs To Fight Pancreatic, Lung Cancer
Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have identified a chemical compound that may eventually lead to a drug that fights cancers that are dependent on a particular anti-viral enzyme for growth.

The researchers are testing the compound's effectiveness at fighting tumors in mice. If it is successful, they will then work to develop a drug based on the compound to combat pancreatic and non-small cell lung cancer, two cancer types in which this particular enzyme, TBK-1, often is required for cancer cell survival..."

Which Type Of Selenium To Be Used For Cancer Prevention Adds To Controversy

Scientists are reporting that the controversy surrounding whether selenium can fight cancer in humans might come down to which form of the essential micronutrient people take. It turns out that not all "seleniums" are the same - the researchers found that one type of selenium supplement may produce a possible cancer-preventing substance more efficiently than another form of selenium in human cancer cells. Their study appears in the ACS' journal Biochemistry..."

"J Toxicol Sci. 2009 Apr;34(2):191-200.

Selenium metabolism in rats with long-term ingestion of Se-methylselenocysteine using enriched stable isotopes.

Abstract

Se-methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys) is not only a selenium (Se) supplement but also a more promising precursor of an anti-tumor drug containing Se than selenomethionine, which is currently used as Se supplement. In this study, the metabolism of MeSeCys labeled with an Se isotope, 82Se, in rats depleted of endogenous natural abundance isotopes with another Se isotope, 78Se, was traced for 21 days when MeSeCys was continuously and perorally ingested at a supplemental dose. The tracer experiment was performed with our improved method that utilized an inductively coupled plasma-deuterium reaction-mass spectrometer. The substitution of endogenous Se with a single isotope, 78Se, facilitated the detection of exogenous labeled Se. Exogenous Se in the form of MeSeCys preferably accumulated and/or assimilated in the liver, kidneys and testes with long-term ingestion of MeSeCys and was utilized for the synthesis of selenoproteins, i.e., extracellular and cellular glutathione peroxidases and selenoprotein P. Meanwhile, intact MeSeCys was not excreted into urine although trimethylselenonium was detected in addition to selenosugar. The results suggest that MeSeCys was transformed into selenide via methylselenol by beta-lyase. Consequently, it is surmised that MeSeCys is a precursor of methylselenol under long-term ingestion.

Large Spectrum" Cancer Suppressor Gene Discovered

Portuguese researchers have discovered a "broad spectrum" cancer suppressor gene called LRP1B which acts by removing proteins crucial for cancer development from the tumour environment. The fact that LRP1B does not act on the tumour itself (in this study thyroid tumours) but, instead, on molecules which are known to be important to many different cancers is what makes it so interesting. Because this means that LRP1B, and also therapies capable of inducing it (or mimicking its effect), could, in theory, be used to treat a variety of cancers. The study by Hugo Prazeres and Paula Soares from IPATIMUP and University of Porto along with colleagues Fernando Rodrigues and Teresa Martins from Portuguese Institute of Oncology, Coimbra was just published in the journal Oncogene(1)..."

Discovery In Liver Cancer Cells Provides New Target For Drugs

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center and VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM) have discovered a novel mechanism in gene regulation that contributes to the development of a form of liver cancer called hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Currently, there is virtually no effective treatment for HCC, and this breakthrough identifies a promising new target for therapeutic intervention..."

High dose of oxygen enhances natural cancer treatment

A technique Michael Jackson reportedly used to prolong his youth is showing promise as a way to boost the effectiveness of a natural cancer remedy.

An environment of pure oxygen at three-and-a-half times normal air pressure adds significantly to the effectiveness of a natural compound already shown to kill cancerous cells, researchers at the University of Washington and Washington State University recently reported in the journal Anticancer Research.

The compound artemisinin isolated from Artemisia annua L, commonly known as wormwood is a natural remedy widely used to treat malaria. In the mid-1990s UW researchers were the first to explore its ability to treat cancer..."

Solubility-enhanced reformulation of paclitaxel, an old drug

Researchers at Lousiana State University Ag Center have determined that rubusoside, a sweetener derived from the Stevia plant, increases the solubility of paclitaxel in water 5,000 times. This will make it possible for paclitaxel to be freeze dried and reconstituted with water. It may even enable an oral paclitaxel medication to be developed.

Paclitaxel is isolated from the Pacific yew, and is sold under the trade names of Taxol and Abraxane. Aqueous only solutions of paclitaxel were not previously possible.
