link didn't work so here is copied article:

Cancer fight can use your computer

By Angela Stewart
Newhouse News Service

If you’ve ever wanted to do something to help speed cancer research, here’s your chance. Any time your computer goes on screensaver — as when you take a break from surfing the Internet to grab a snack — your idle computing power can be used by scientists exploring the causes of cancer.

Researchers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania are teaming with computer giant IBM on a global humanitarian project called World Community Grid. Think of it as a virtual supercomputer that uses the collective power of millions of personal and business computers to address one of society’s most difficult challenges.

IBM is helping the researchers at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania analyze huge numbers of tissue specimens and conduct multiple experiments imultaneously. That’s where you come in, at ww.worldcommunitygrid.org.

Click ‘‘How You Can Help,’’ and you can download free software and register to donate unused computer power. ‘‘One of the difficulties we have had is keeping up with the rate at which we can process specimens,’’ explained David Foran, lead researcher and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Cancer Institute in New Brunswick, N.J. ‘‘You can do on the grid what would take you 130 years to do on a single desktop."

i agree, but i would change the 'screensaver' language. i don't think it accurately describes the CPU usage function smile

Re: WCG on front page of Syracuse, NY newspaper

Screensaver is the perfect word. It isn't entirely accurate but it explains more to more people in the space the author was given to work with than any other words. It's a news article and it needs to be short to suit the audience. Start mentioning processes and process priority and preemption and the eyes turn away and look for something lighter and faster paced. Screensaver helps sets the hook. Once the fish is reeled in and you have his undivided attention then you explain the whole truth.
