Re: Join SeriousCrunchers - more free ice tea

Sorry to double-post:

I had to cut back on WCG-Cancer on my computers. Although the CPU activity was non-intrusive, the hard drive access that is part of the Cancer processing has reached the point where it was interfering with efficient use of my office computers. So I have forced it to rest idle for 10 hours during the business days. crying

Guess I'll be sharing pie with GP from now on. biggrin

Hiya, LH.

Yes, the Cancer project is pretty intense. One of my pcs', for reasons I could not figure out, had the HD thrashing constantly. Response times to inputs from mouse clicks particularly were off on all machines I ran HDC on. I just switched to other WCG projects to save the wear and tear. They're all worthwhile.

I also use my PC mainly for work, so I switched to other WCG projects until I buy more RAM or a new machine (whatever comes first biggrin )

It's not a matter of RAM - I have 1.5 Gig. The process writes large intermediate solutions to the hard drive, which becomes the dominant task, causing noticeable system slowdown. The tech people say that the BOINC agent does not have this problem, but for now, I don't want to switch. They tell me this is a peculiar problem to Cancer using the UD agent.

My other option is to switch away from cancer, but I have been committed to cancer only, to the point that my computers that cannot run WCG-HDC are still over at UD running their cancer units. Perhaps I will have to give way on this goal, and as Galbraith mentions, move on to other "worthwhile" projects.
