rose A bunch of questions

I'm relatively new to WCG, having joined just a couple of days ago. I have a bunch of questions I'd be curious to know the answers to:

  • If I am logged on and my screensaver starts up, will it keep processing?
  • If I am logged on and someone Switches user to another user, will it keep on processing?
  • If the account I installed it to is not logged on and another user logs on, will that other user start the program?
  • How does WCG know that my processor is still working on the problem, given that I log off and shut down at the end of the day and restart the next day?
  • I have a job that's been running for over 50 hours on one machine (1 GHz PIII), is this normal or should it finish earlier?

Thanks in advance
Dweebs

1. Yes
2. Not clear on your question ... but it runs when your machine it is on
3. Do not understand.
4. The program runs when your machine is running. Stops when you stop ... starts when you start.
5. Calculation time varies widely. 50 hours is not uncommon depending on the WU and the capabilities of your machine.

Re: A bunch of questions

Hi there, I'll try to take a shot at your question 2 and 3. smile (did a quick test).

2. if your account is log in, and simply 'switch' to another account, then it will keep processing. (although the new account won't be able to see it). I tested this by 'switched' to another account, then manually try to start UD program, for which I received a 'program already running' message. (can't remember the exact phrase).

3. if your account is not log in, and another account log on, then the program will not run, unless the other person/account manually initiated the process. (assuming that they have authority to the files).

another thing you might want to try for question 3, is to put the WCG program under 'Start'-> 'startup' folder for All Users, and not just your account. That way, it should start no matter which account is log in.

Hope this'll help biggrin

Re: A bunch of questions

I'm relatively new to WCG, having joined just a couple of days ago. I have a bunch of questions I'd be curious to know the answers to:

If I am logged on and my screensaver starts up, will it keep processing?

Yes, as long as you don't have the "Run only as screensaver" checkbox checked (located on the Prefrences panel on the agent). In fact, you can change to any screen saver you want and it won't affect the program.

If I am logged on and someone Switches user to another user, will it keep on processing?

I'm not 100% sure since I've never used XP's Fast User Switching capability, but as long as your user remains logged on, all your applications should run, even the Agent.

If the account I installed it to is not logged on and another user logs on, will that other user start the program?

No. It should only be added to the Startup folder of the user that installed it. You can always move it to the 'All Users' Startup folder, but you may run into file permission problems. I don't recommend it.

How does WCG know that my processor is still working on the problem, given that I log off and shut down at the end of the day and restart the next day?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. The agent only works on the workunit when it's running. If you turn the computer off or shut the agent down, you're not processing any work.
If you mean how does the WCG collective know you're still working on it, we just assume so. We know the workunit was handed out to you and the device hasn't reported back. You have it until the device reports back. If it doesn't report back within a certain amount of time, we hand the workunit off to another device. You can still return it and still get credit for the work you've done however.

I have a job that's been running for over 50 hours on one machine (1 GHz PIII), is this normal or should it finish earlier?

Yes, it's normal. The work we're doing on Human Proteome Folding is unlike any other grid project out there. The work is hard and non-deterministic. This means we don't know how long a workunit may take. We just put a cap on it. A workunit may finish in a few hours or it may take a week or more (depending on the speed of your machine). Don't worry, it's cranking away. You'll get the same amount of points completing 1 workunit in 5 days as if you completed 5 workunits in 5 days (assuming same CPU time, etc.)

Re: A bunch of questions

This works a treat. Only on XP pro though XP home doesn't support it.
I have my logging on my PC as "Dad" and when my kids log over me into their accounts instead of selecting "log off" they select "switch user". My account keeps on crunching WCG and they can run any applications they need separately in their area of the PC.

Another trick is to use TweakUI or some other shell modification tool. To set up an autologon account so that when the PC reboots it logs back in as "Dad" and launches the agent from the startup directory. This saves you lost processing time if theres a power cut or your PC reboots due to the vagaries of Windows. Otherwise windows just stops at the login screen and as the agent is not a windows services (without workrounds using srvany.exe) crunching does not start until you manually log back into your account.

Regards

Dave
