angry No Sticky, No Crunchy !!

mvnForum is the software that these forums run on. I just got back from the mvnForum website. Read this thread from the forums there.

The latest version of mvnForum as opposed to the version WCG uses which is 2 years out of date has stickys as well as announcements, both very cool features that are badly needed in these forums.

OK crunchers, let's tell them. Cut and paste the 4 lines below into your post. Then change all the { to [. Then click Preview to see if you got it right. The lines will appear big and red like they do below unless you mised one of the {.

Re: No Sticky, No Crunchy !!

Hi Dagorath,
Back in Spring 2005 we expected to see an upgrade on the mvnForum software. We were eventually told that it would require a lot of programming because our version was customized to run on multiple servers (which is why some features do not work). With all the programming for new projects, debug for HPF2, and the upcoming stats update, I do not see when we can expect to see a new version of mvnForum customized for WCG. Not this year, certainly.

We've been pushing for an upgrade for other reasons, too. The current version has a good number of bugs. And believe me, we bring up the topic a good deal behind the scenes.

That said, Dagorath - spamming all the forums with a duplicate post isn't a good idea. It would be polite to remove them yourself, before they are deleted or locked.... you will have to ask Lawrence to help, sine he has replied to them all.

Put it all on 1 server.

Put it all on 1 server.

Now that is an idea worth pursuing. What would be the effect on reliability? Could we have a backup server mirroring the main forum server, ready to take over? That would let us upgrade AND eliminate the annoying bugs in the customized version.

We have not been pushing on this issue, because Linux and Mac OS X and the stats revision always seemed more impoortant.

But is there some alternative to running on multiple servers that we could live with?

Lawrence, I've been pushing it.... but then, we're lobbying for so many improvements, sometimes things get overlooked.

Please will you remove your replies to the other posts, so Dagorath can delete the mess he has made?

Re: No Sticky, No Crunchy !!

There is NOTHING !!!!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING !!!!! that has priority over effective communications with the VOLUNTEERS that do all the work for NO PAY.

I don't know what the options are because I've never seen their setup BUT i have visited MANY other forums that get TONS more posts and they all have stickys. Go figure.

It takes a long time to get a bad rep but once ya got it takes even longer to live it down.

It is more then just the dual server - we have also implemented things such as single sign in (this software comes with its on authentication and authorization set up - we modified this so that you only have to sign in once to view your stats and access the forums).

Trust me if time was no object we would have the latest everything.

Re: No Sticky, No Crunchy !!

Ya sacrificed stickys to have single sign in???? And then locked into a no-upgrade path? OK, extremely difficult upgrade path. Still doesn't make sense.

Re: No Sticky, No Crunchy !!

Chill, please.

You seem to be trying to destroy WCG's reputation all by yourself.

Stickys are not the most critical thing in the world. The biggest and best forums don't use them at all. User Friendly doesn't use them, nor does Slashdot. Both sites handle thousands of posts every day. So, I have "figured" and I find your thesis lacks weight.
