He who has the gold makes the rules.
HPF2 is very new, and has a few glitches. The techs don't want to make rules about them, just fix 'em. For now, you can always switch to FAAH if your computer is struggling.

Re: A post that would be very clear about when to abort and how

I've looked through 30 of the reports for HPF2 units on my Results Status pages. That's about 90 reports from what I assume is a random mix of slow and fast hosts. It looks to me like the average time for a slower computer to complete an HPF2 is about 9/10 hrs. I saw 1 report of 15 hrs, 2 reports of about 12 hrs. Medium speed machines seem to take about 6hrs. The fastest machines are taking about 3 hrs. So I give you all...

Dag's Definitive Guide to HPF2 Dumping

  • If no graphics in 10 minutes, dump the WU, applies to slow as well as fast machines running UD.
  • 1.8 GHz and up, BOINC or UD: dump if 0 progress in 3 hrs.
  • 1.8GHz to 900 MHz, BOINC or UD: dump if 0 progress in 6 hrs.
  • 900 to 500 MHz, BOINC or UD: dump if 0 progress in 12 hrs.

Remember, WUs error out, get lost, etc. every single day and the world still turns, nobody kicks in your door in the middle of the night and hauls you off to jail just because ya dumped a WU. I would say if you've waited for progress for the average length of time it takes a machine like yours to complete an entire WU then you've done the best you can... dump the WU.

But first, before you dump it please read WCG's request that we send them information on any sticky HPF2 work units we encounter to help them debug these rare, sticky WUs.

Re: A post that would be very clear about when to abort and how

fortunately i have not had any problems at all with UD since i first reported the 'no moving graph - 0%'.

that's a very good sign, so maybe it is better just to let crunchers straggle into the forum one by one and identify their work units. i just couldn't figure how many people might be stuck for a year without even knowing it smile

but now i realize very few if any cases will be like that.

Sekerob,

I'll send you one of my 900GHz machines as soon as I get all the bugs worked out. Oh, I guess I'll have to send one to WCG first so they'll be able to keep up. wink

I just hate it when I get MHz and GHz mixed up, so embarassing. Thanks, my previous post has been corrected.
