How download batch of units in one and send several results back as one?

Hi,

Need help with the following, please.

I will be changing my living circumstances shortly. This means that I will not have access to an internet connection at all times. I would, though be able to run my computer still at around 24/7. What I would like to do is that following:

1. Arrange for UD to download a batch of work-units in one go. So, how do I arrange that and is it possible to specify how many units?

2. Arrange for UD to start processing one of the batch and, when it has finished

that one, skip trying to send results if there is no internet connection. How do I do that?

3. If there is no internet connection, arrange for UD to just store the result of the last unit and automatically start the processing of the next. How do I do that?

4. When there is a internet connection arrange for UD to send what results it has processed and download replacement units for the ones completed (within a predefined number of unprocessed units that I would want to have on my disk at one time). How do I do that?

4. Arrange for the above to happen on a repeat basis. How do I do that?

If anyone could help with this I would be grateful. I would also be grateful if other issues were raised by other more experienced members covering related matters that I have obviously overlooked.

Thanks.

1. Download UD_Monitor though its not supported by WCG. It can download as many units in 'slots' you create and send back completed WU's in batches.

2. Drop UD agent and switch to BOINC 5.4.9. Then set in profile how many days you wish to 'cache'.

There are several threads around under UD Agent and BOINC agent on this forum to guide you...use search.

Re: How download batch of units in one and send several results back as one?

Thanks for the reply.

Suggestion '1' sounds best for me.

Yes, I did search and didn't find the information I needed in coherent form.

For anyone else with the same issue here is the necessary link to UD Monitor. (Things are explained clearly there.):

http://udmon.sourceforge.net/

As far as can see the only outstanding issue is how do I know how many days the Grid will wait before deciding that a downloaded work-unit is 'lost'? Any ideas?

For BOINC, it is seven days. For UD it may be the same, but I don't know.

Try and connect at least twice a week, and you should be just fine.

Re: How download batch of units in one and send several results back as one?

Thanks.

I'll stick with UD as I know it to work on my system without problems.

I'm reckoning on being able to connect on every third day so may be in the clear even with UD. I'm a bit bemused that the people running the Grid don't publicily provide this kind of information for UD and its projects as a matter of course. Seems that in the forum there are repeat requests for varieties of the same types of information over time. I don't understand why an 'overseeing committee' of some kind doesn't flag those consistently arising issues and see that they get added to some form of definitive FAQs. Or, for that matter, press for re-coding of Agents, so that cruncher concerns are addressed. It's the one thing about the Grid that I find disappointing; that the people runnning it seem not to have a strong focus on the needs/concerns of the number crunchers for information that the crunchers obviously feel they would like to better enable them to deal with running an agent on their computer systems.

In any case, I'll test the 'three days' out before I move and if have any problems will post again.

Many thanks.

Re: How download batch of units in one and send several results back as one?

To add to Didactylos comment, knreed of WCG wrote, that there is a grace week for BOINC. Thing is at the end of 7x24 hours a 4th copy of the WU is send out, thus when sending back a copy from the first 3 send out simultaneously in the 8th to 14th day, you'd be creating superfluous work. You can see those late once in the BOINC Result Status detail with "No Reply" attached to it. I've decided to monitor a few i've identified in my queu to see if they come back within week 2 and if they get points.....in reality he or she, when late, should check back and abort before commencement of the redundant copy, as the backup cruncher rightfully will complete.....that copy has far as i can see only 48/96 hours return requirement or thereabouts!

Errata to the UD monitor suggestion: For each cache slot an additional device-name is created at WCG. 12 slots, 12 devices. Then when you watch the points in the UD agent, you'd see the points at the time the particular slot send in its completed WU the previous time it was used. Effectively only the points at WCG My Grid page would be the complete and correct status. With BOINC the cache just uses a single device. The Boinc point system is quite different and goes thru 2 translations **, so there you'd always have to check back at My Grid to see your cumulatives.

** Boinc points are X per hour as determined by the BOINC benchmark times hours times 7. Thus e.g. 70 BOINC point become most always excatly 490 WCG points. Almost always as you see the whole BOINC points only, but decimals are used to compute the WCG points.

phew.....time for coffee.

Re: How download batch of units in one and send several results back as one?

Wow! That's a lot to take in. I'll have to think about that. smile

However, in summary for UD, it still seems that so far no is sure what 'grace period' exists.

I'll soldier on with my 'three days' and see how it works out. As far as points go I'm not obsessive about them so that's not a real concern for me. What does concern is that I'm not wasting my own or the Grid's time in trying to turn in redundant results.

I do, though, take it that once in the some-time future, when I no longer need to use UD Monitor, that I can delete the 'additional devices' that UD Monitor has constructed for each 'slot' at the Grid website and still retain the points that those slots generated (i.e. the points will be passed to whatever device(s) remain). Is that correct?

Apart from my initial concern - not having an internet connection at all times - it now occurs to me that UD Monitor might have another function that may appeal to people: it does allow the prospect that it is not necessary to have a system connected to the internet at all times solely to meet the needs of an Agent. Good concept as some people are concerned about that (and having a fairly constant address) leaving their systems more prone to attacks.

Thanks again for the advice (and the thoughts).
