I WAS at 100%, now about 60% cpu

I have a Athlon 3200 single core and my processor time WAS at 100% all the time like it's supposed to do. Somehow yesterday now Task Manager only shows between 50 and 60% being used. That's a whole lot of idle time going to waste! What happened or changed??

Lawrencehardin's post in this thread explains why it's 60% and how you can change it back.

Re: I WAS at 100%, now about 60% cpu

It's a breeze to change it back, in fact i used to run the manual setting at 95% when using UD agent.....the days when it was enough to keep my CPU at the desired temperature.....now i use Speedfan and go full throttle. Speenfan controls, temperature related, the fan speed and is ahead of this funny curve ball these special throttling CPU's throw!

I totally agree with the 'Opt-In if you want higher' approach. A happy client might give 1 new 1, an unhappy client looses you 10, a small business adage. BUT, future UD GUI's might reserve a little corner where it shows what the throttle is set @.

PS...the 60% default has had significant impact on its first day, where most i guess were/still are unaware. The Global stats dropped to below 100 years production (98 in fact)....is that true???? Somewhere else i posed the question, if UD reports wallclocktime, there should be no global stat impact due that???????

Re: I WAS at 100%, now about 60% cpu

The production drop may be due to many business machines being turned off for the weekend.

Re: I WAS at 100%, now about 60% cpu

hmmm, we already digested the 4 to 3 BOINC quorum impact (and disputed by others) and other issues which caused a lowest low at the initial switch to 104 years around may 20/21....98 years is a new low in recent months, including weekends.....vacation or many who switched off against normal for the weekend because they were not getting HPFs? Looking at the stats only last new years day and christmas showed these sub 100 numbers, that's when there were tens of thousands of devices less subscribed to the WCG grid....i'm not buying the weekend argument (yet) nerd

sfjoeypup, you're welcome. Glad to hear you're back to full speed.

Sekerob, as you said, people turning off at end of hpf1 or just not bothering or unable to crunch faah until hpf2 was available, vacations... who knows for sure?

Re: I WAS at 100%, now about 60% cpu

BUT, future UD GUI's might reserve a little corner where it shows what the throttle is set @.

This is a very good idea. However, it likely won't appear in any of the current GUIs due to our current workload, but we may try to work it in on later GUIs.

Somewhere else i posed the question, if UD reports wallclocktime, there should be no global stat impact due that???????

Yes, UD reports wallclock time, BUT time is only accumulated when results are returned. Now that the default throttle is set to 60%, a bulk of the results will take a while longer to return, thus the initial drop in CPU time. It should, however, return close to normal after a few days.

Re: I WAS at 100%, now about 60% cpu

Didn't work for me, on my system the "tool" sets the registry key for the current user, but the agent is looking for the default user.

Any reason why this should be using HKLM instead of a user key?

That "should be" should be "shouldn't be".
