Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

Now those down-under Aussies have their feet to the ground....'soon i researched the throttling back in jul.05 i set the environment variable, not the registry to 95%.....just enough breath to have UD agent become truly inobtrusive, yet working 24/7!

PS, why not put your country in both the WCG Member AND Forum profile....helps the performance graph per continent.....Europe's ahead of the Merkens'. They claim they are less willing to fez up where they are, cause that country was ripped from the indians. Also they are less exposed to the eir of the Canuks up north tongue

angry Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

When WCG started the claim was that the program would not interfere with the other programs running on the PC. Also no harm would be made to the PC. Now they come up with a 60% throttle adjustment so it won’t interfere.

Was it a lie or just incompetence?

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

Hi oneguy,
If you are running the UD client (most people are) then you can set the throttle to any CPU percentage you like using http://worldcommunitygrid.org/files/WCGridMaxCPU.exe . I run mine at 100%. If you run at 60% then you get 60% of the points per hour that you would get at 100%. [Added: I'm wrong! smile As explained in later posts, UD awards points on clock time, not CPU time.] It is explained at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=cpuuse#230

sad Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

I must say, I agree with the sentiment that all members should have been emailed about the change in default CPU usage.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

Letterman's Top 10 Reasons why WCG did not email all the UD agent users to inform them UD had been throttled to 60%

10. They didn't get the memo from upstairs.
9. They got the memo but forgot to do it.
8. They did send an email but IBM's ISP's spam filter caught it and killed it.
7. They sent the email but got the addresses all mixed up
6. They don't know about email
5. They are sending the email but geez... how many emails can ya type in 1 day.
4. IBM just can't afford the bandwidth.
3. UD users don't want to know what's going on
2. An obscure little notice on the back page of a newsletter is more likely to be noticed.
1. They knew HPF2 was doomed to failure before they launched it so they throttled back the agent so they won't run out of work.

There, first to have the cahones to say what we're all thinking.

Is there BBCode tags for reverse ordered lists? I really have trouble typing from 1 to 10 backwards and I have more Letterman type lists I want to post, lots more.

I care to think that at 60% CPU utilisation, u still 'wall'clock up the same hours in UD Agent, hence still get the same amount of points.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

Sekerob is correct. Running the throttle at 60% does not mean you only get 60% as many points. No matter what the throttle is set at (on UD) you will receive the same number of points for the same amount of wall clock time.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

The new projects with their higher memory demands are more likely to affect the average computer.

WCG won't steal a single clock cycle that is needed by another program. However, there are other ways that grid computing can affect a computer. Mostly this has to do with IO, and under some circumstances a slowdown may be observed.

As far as overheating is concerned, the 60% is a safety margin. This margin is helpful for attracting large corporate networks to the grid.

Some of the technologies that the throttle was designed to cope with didn't exist when the grid was launched. WCG are merely responding to new information and new technology.
