Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

I think anyone creating a scripted install would just set the registry value directly. However, nobody has replied to my comment about the throttle being a per-user setting. Is there any simple way to set the throttle for all users?

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

Again, it is my feeling members should be emailed to see if they want to set at 100%.

Also I wonder how many people really care about this 'throttle' thing. I personally know very little about 'registries' etc., much less wanting to discuss how to set them.

Was it such a huge problem at 100% default setting?

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

My task manager said that it was running 98% however after 50 minutes running time my progress was still at zero, so I restarted my machine and it went back to zero so I abouted it. I did not ask for it as my orojects was reset my wcg. Please ask me before hand before you do this again as I only want the faah at this moment.

Yep, it wil show 0% progress for a very long time, at least with the project I'm doing (HPF2). But it will jump to something like 16% once the first calculation is done. So don't worry about the 0%.

Didactylos, when u say 'all users' are you talking about a single machine? If so, the environment variable can be set in Windows for all users in the Systems control Panel, Advance, Environment Variable Option, left hand bottom of the Advanced Tab with adding Wcgrid_Max_CPU in the System Variables section.....for UD agent i got it set to 95 (%). It would pick it up from the moment of restarting the agent or starting a new WU.

Errate: For multiple machines, i DonNo...one by one i guess.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

WCG have decided that the increased active membership offsets the loss of direct CPU usage.

I'll say that I like the change. In fact, it has caused a direct increase in CPU cycles for WCG. I'm a software developer and at work my T40 gets loaded pretty well. So, I had been turning off the WCG agent while at work and then turning it back on when I was at home and I thought about it. The same goes for my wife's T41p.

However, now I am able to set a profile to just crunch HPF2 for the laptops. The fact that it's a bit easier on my machine allows me to run it all the time even when working.

I know that the WCG client has a low priority, but believe me, with the work I do it usually hurts performance even if WCG is stepping out of the way and allowing other processes more CPU time. It's likely that my laptop was slowing down the CPU due to the heat and that's probably why it was slower when running WCG on a workunit that used all of the CPU.

A great feature would be if you could put a slide bar in to throttle instead of some registry setting. I don't mind using it but it's an annoyance to do this to all of the machines I have especially if I'm tuning it to find a "comfort" level of CPU usage that's above 60%.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

watzkej, there is a gui tool that you can use with a nice little slide bar. Please read the following FAQ about this feature and the link with where you can download it from.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

I can't help noticing this is an HKCU value, so must be set for each user. I'm assuming setting the value in HKLM won't override the value (or be noticed at all?)

We don't look in HKLM at the moment, but we could do that. The problem is we'd have to update the GUI tool as well and it's not a priority.

As someone else has noted, you can use the old way of setting it via the environment variable: WCGRID_MAX_CPU. If you set that variable for everyone the throttle mechanism will use that to set the registry value.

The throttle code looks for the registry value first. If it's not there, it looks for the environment variable. If that isn't there, it uses the built in default throttle setting.

There is a GUI tool you can download from our site. You can find the link here:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=cpuuse#230

We can not add this feature to the UD agent itself because we do not own or have access to the code. That's why we created a separate tool.

Re: What a nuisance !!!!!!

Does anyone prefer having the WCG run at it's new default of 60%?
Or another % other than 100%?
Any particular reason?

I prefer the new default, it may take a few more hours to finish a work unit but i'm now much happier with how my system is running. Being new at this and not a computer tech wizard i was considering uninstalling WCG due to its toll on my system, particularly heat wise, i was getting cpu temp alarms often from intel's moniter (which i didn't know was there till the cpu started to go into melt down) saying the cpu of my P4 was over 72C with the other sensors not far behind.

This slider thing to change the amount of cpu used is a great idea and was needed. If i was confident enough (last time i did something i wasn't sure about it required a reformat) i might use it and increase to 70% or 80%.
