XBOX 360 support?

Any chance of getting an Xbox 360 install program made up? Lots of these things getting out there now, lots of processing power and internet connections setting idle...

Re: XBOX 360 support?

I will go out on a limb and say 'Not in the immediate future'. We have too much to do this year and the number of XBOX 360s is still only a fraction of what it will be. But if some project scientists develop a XBOX 360 version, we would have to seriously consider it.

This is just my personal opinion. I have not heard anything official.

Re: XBOX 360 support?

It's highly unlikely now, and only a vague hope for the future.

Porting to a games platform will require a complete rewrite (some of these science applications are written in FORTRAN and other exotic* languages). In addition, there are numerous complications caused by the architecture. Games consoles are nowhere near as good at general purpose computing as they are at graphics.

As far as I know, there is only one serious attempt at porting a science application to a games console, and they haven't got there yet. Maybe they never will.

* Okay, old.

Linux has been ported to the older version XBox but does require some minor hardware mods. There is a www site ( could be Linuxhareware.org) with pictures and instructions.

Re: XBOX 360 support?

Unfortunately, the original XBox doesn't meet (by quite some way) the minimum requirements for any of the current WCG projects.

Last I heard, the people attempting the same trick on the 360 were finding life very difficult indeed.

confused Re: XBOX 360 support?

I'm curious though ... How many gamers will leave their xbox360 turned on for crunching, when they are not gaming?

I owm a xbox360, however (without being selfish) I would not leave turned on after gaming. For one: the machine already make incredible noise when just turned on. During gameplay I usually don't notice, because the gamesounds. When reading a book, it is absolutely horrible.

During gameplay, I probably won't want to crunch. I will need all processing power and memory for excellent graphics. That basically the reason why I bought the thing.

Ehh ... an xbox360 devilish no, that can't be it ...

Read a little about it. Very interesting! One has to install Linux on the PS3, which give a load of advantages on top of being able to run boincs ps3grid biggrin

Re: XBOX 360 support?

The best way to run WCG is without the graphics module.... that's what we've been advising all the time to get optimum performance.
