The direct connect method isn't accurate/reliable because it reads log and/or state files in the BOINC directory. It seems information needed for calculating CPU efficiency, for example, isn't kept in those files. I haven't studied the RPC API but I gather RPC gets the info through "queries" to boinc.exe and/or boinc.mgr directly.
