Re: Beta test of improved completion time estimates available

all the 'fuss' not to be confused with 'fuzzy' logic ;>)....survived 6.6.6, in your time zone you still got a few hours to go.....zero concern over spiking...everything is behind a 150000 joule power filter and a PSU...even feel save against EMP. No its those darn script kiddies, hackers, virus infected emails that dont need opening to get onto your machine that make me unplug the router when away....mostly courtesy of cruft produced by MSFT making their OS and apps like a swiss cheese....we are the Daleks, resistance is futile alien 2

Futile? Phapp!!! The only time I've caught a virus is when I neglected to give the mafia (Norton) they're cut. Cough up the yearly fee for Norton's virus updates and sleep peacefully.

Dagorath, Now you know that Big Bill G of the Seattle family sells both the OS and the antivir/spam/adware packs to protect against the holes in their OS. Bill G is no longer motivated to fix the swiss cheese called Windows. Fixes btw are medicine to suppress the symptoms, not to cure the decease....for that surchical removal is required.....my next OS installation will be a Linux version.....i'm going off the deep end here.

Now back to the purpose of the thread:

RickH: It's done a Rosetta overnight and is on a second one. The TTG is still right on the money with each percent skip, so you created a keeper mod applause. Point claims remained exactly same also. I promise to test BOINCview when i get around. smile

Works well with BOINC but BOINView is still reporting inaccurate times. Perhaps it needs more time to sort itself out. smile

Re: Beta test of improved completion time estimates available

Are you using BoincView 1.2.5? I think previous versions did their own estimations (which weren't very good, either), but this latest version just uses the estimates that it gets from BOINC. It should be showing exactly the same completion estimates as the BOINC manager.

Thanx for that RickH. I was indeed using the old version of BoincView and one of my machines is now showing the same finishing times but still having probs with my dual core jobby. Boinc is reporting accurate times but BoincView is still wildly out.

Re: Beta test of improved completion time estimates available

Finally got BOINCview (1.2.5) working. Only searching the web and finding a BOINCview wiki helped to understand a couple of CFG files needed setup in the BOINC dir, as well as deciding on the method of communication.

I like the fact that it has a screen that keeps track of all completed work. Curious if it will tell about 'valid', 'invalid' 'error' 'too late' etc.....think not, as that would require retrieval from WCG, whilst the records are still on the Result Status pages.

I'll report back later on the (non)deviations from my spreadsheet algorythm wence it got a couple Wu's down.....its needing to calibrate itself including the establishment of the CPU efficiency, which first showed 'one moment', then '0.0000'.

Re: Beta test of improved completion time estimates available

So, I've got BoincView 1.2.5 running in combo with BOINC 5.4.9 since June 11, 06. Observations are:

1. Logs proper all results completed. No points per result are recorded, though the Projects tab does show the comulative correct number, same as BOINC....why not...and could this feature be added (suspect it difficult since the submission of result and feedback of points has including pending validations and inconclusives a substantial time gap)?
2. Boincview seems to disengage much longer from BOINC, than the instructed times....not discovered what the frequencies are.
3. Various calculations / estimates are wrong as the base CPU time and particular the completion clock times are way off...e.g. presently a WU says completio at 21:21, where my spreadsheet algorythm gives 19:37 wallclock time on an 8 CPU hour crunch. BOINCview seems not to learn from past CPU times versus clock times.

4. The Estimated Points is based on the BOINC benchmark, thus the base number is correct, but since the CPU hours are wrong, the number is wild. The number on the presently processed WU is only giving points on time completed, not on estimated CPU end time.... pretty useless since a crashed WU will give zero points.
5. Never saw a single message passing thru the message tab....whats the info there to show?
6. Estimated speed field..never seen anything in this column
7. CPU efficiency column, suggest on first connection that its computing with the "one moment" indication, then after few minutes goes to "0.00000" and never waivers from that....whats the info there to show?

Possibly i got a setting wrong. Its connected via "direct access". Tried the "via network" option, but wont connect, asking for a password where i've used machine and user id's as well as boinc account keys and password to no avail.

Any hints on this?

thx

Errata: See below post on the fixes. Only the Bolded item numbers are remaining suggestion/quiry

Re: Beta test of improved completion time estimates available

To connect to a remote computer, you need the host name (of the computer you want to connect to) and the GUI RPC password. This is contained in gui_rpc_auth.cfg

In addition, you need to verify your firewall isn't blocking the RPC ports used by BOINC. These are TCP 31416 and 1043. Either port should be sufficient.

You also need to create a file called remote_hosts.cfg in the BOINC folder, containing the IP or host names of any computer you want to use to connect to BOINC. Note: this is the name of the computer running BOINC View, not the name of the computer the file is on.

Re: Beta test of improved completion time estimates available

DiDactylos thanks... i had already created the 2 cfg files from the Wiki instructions when installing BOINCview, but somehow i pasted the second BOINC account hex into the 'auth' file...now understand the link. All now works and the CPU efficiency, TTtC and WallClock completion times are now very close to the mentioned spreadsheet calculation....semi-real-time....and put in archive.

The Learned here is, that the direct connect somehow does not transmit all ...RPC being the vehicle to move the info around. I'll edit my previous post and indicate which items are resolved / am happy with.

PS: Sunbelt of Kerio Personal Firewall also analysed my Firewall Logs and tipped me of on the some considerable 'hidden' CPU time loss....there was a conflict with the Intrusion Detection feature between the Firewall and the Avast Antivir, which recently also had added a WebShield Intrusion function. One can only have one do that function, so only let Avast's active.....now got the amazing 97% allotment to the Science whilst writing this in FFX and using their integrated Spellbound extension biggrin

ciao.
