Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Just our of curiosity...

Each machine I add here in the US adds about 6 bucks a month to my bill. (US Dollars). How much on the average does a 24/7 machine cost in the UK??

I have 8 machines from 366 to 3 GHz. This does make a noticeable difference for me, but as you, I seem to be an addict.

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Hi scalewiz (another 10K on the total applause )

That's a tricky one to answer

The idea behind grid computing is that while you are normally working on your PC instead of the CPU just twiddling it's thumbs while you peck at the keyboard writing a Word Document that 2.8Ghz processor can be doing something useful as well wink (2.8Ghz is about the average speed for a PC on the WCG!)

The difference between a PC being on and idle and being on and flat out is about 20W per hour - it will become a lot less with the more power efficient processors now being rolled out

That's the idea and so the commitment is measured in pennies

This is how is starts out and then one day you find yourself flipping through that PC magazine comparing CPU and Motherboard prices and it is the start of a slippery slope

before the last increase which was yesterday of another 12% the average price of a KWH for me was 9.426 pence which at todays exchange rate is

17.579 American Cents or 13.744 Euro Cents (before another 12%!)

(Apologies to all other currencies not mentioned from around the globe blushing)

I really don't know how much my PC's consume per hour as they all have different internals CPU's Motherboards Graphics cards Memory, Disk Drive etc It also makes a considerable difference the efficiency of the Power Supply Unit . One of my PC's has a Seasonic PSU which it claims is 80% efficient your cheap and cheerful PC case with PSU is not likely to be as good.

If on average it was 300W at the plug then each months crunching per PC would set me back £20.64 (before the last rise) which I would say is on the high side.

At this time of year in the UK that (on the high side) 300W becomes heat which is not very welcome... However over Autumn (Fallflag) Winter and Spring in the UK that heat comes in useful and offsets against the central heating running costs

So it's a tricky cake to slice

But the cost of being a dedicated cruncher takes more dedication by the day

So hats off to everyone who runs their PC 24/7 for this great cause

Dave

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Got the letter from British Gas today on the price increases from the 4th September

Can anyone beat these prices £0.20021 for the first 225KWH per quarter then £0.10334 for each KWH thereafter !!!!!

That's $0.37559 for the first 225 and then $0.19387 for the remainder

or

That's €0.29333 for the first 225 and then €0.1514 for the remainder

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Just recieved the electricity bill today.
In Australia, look likes I need to pay an extra $1000 per year to have 4 PCs running 100% CPU 24/7
compare to running two "mostly" idle PCs 24/7 before I join WCG.

So I will drop my plan to increase the number of PCs running, instead, I will upgrade to faster CPUs.

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Cheers Mr Cool

Over £100 per processor has disappeared from the AM2's since launch I'm sticking with AMD and waiting to see what Santa might bring
