David Autumns has volunteered to put together and host a podcast promoting WCG. He has requested submissions of videos, images, audio tracks, etc. that promote WCG and encourage new members to join and participate. I have submitted to David a short video I made at home with my webcam. The script for that video is provided below. It covers a few basic ideas about WCG, nothing too deep. Perhaps other members could produce something that augments my video and submit your work to David.
----------------------------------------Anybody interested in translating my script into another language is welcome to do so. The script is public domain, use it as you will. I have given my script the title Dagorath WCG Promo Script to distinguish it from other scripts that may be posted here. If you post a script then please give it a title too. My script is formatted with single sentence paragraphs to make it easy to read while shooting the video. I have used a <P> to denote what would normally be paragraph breaks. Dagorath WCG Promo Script June 1, 2006 Hi, my name is ________. I am helping to advance research into diseases like cancer and AIDS by volunteering in the World Community Grid. I am just your average guy, not a tech or computer expert, but by teaming up with tens of thousands of other volunteers at World Community Grid I am helping to accomplish some amazing research into causes and cures for disease. I help by donating time on my personal computer to a non-profit research project that requires an enormous amount of computing power, more power than the fastest supercomputers in the world can provide. It's called World Community Grid and the URL is on your screen now. <p> You don't need any technical expertise or training to participate in World Community Grid. All you need is a computer, a connection to the Internet and 10 minutes of your time to install the software. The software is free and it's easy. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and again... it's free. After you install the software there is no further work required of you, it's all automatic. The software runs in the background using CPU idle time. It does not slow your computer down so you will be able to use it like you always do. <p> The software connects your computer to a grid consisting of tens of thousands of personal computers called hosts running in homes and offices around the world. Your computer is then another host on the grid. The project divides their work into millions of small packages called Work Units which are distributed to participating hosts. The hosts compute the work in the work units and return the results to the server computers located at the project. The average home computer computes 1 Work Unit in 10 hours. By dividing the task into many small tasks and distributing the work over many hosts, the research scientists are tapping into significantly more power than can be provided by even the fastest supercomputers. The concept is called grid computing and work that used to take 10 years is now being accomplished in 1 year. <p> There is still an enormous amount of work to be done. You can get more information and sign up for the project at the URL on your screen, www.worldcommunitygrid.org. There you will see the project is endorsed by hundreds of businesses, universities and research facilities around the world. For example, W.H.O., the World Health Organisation, an agency of the United Nations endorses World Community Grid. IBM Corporation provides the server computers and looks after security so you can be assured World Community Grid is one of the safest things you can do on the Internet today. In practise, your computer will communicate only with the project servers, never with the other host computers on the grid. All transactions with the servers are secured through encryption and other strong security measures. <p> Please, check out the url on your screen and join the grid. It costs nothing to join the project and very little to participate. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 1, 2006 3:18:40 PM] |

Hi Dagorath
----------------------------------------Keep up the good work it's looking good I'e been thinking (overrated activity) what about making a short and sweet direct to the point vid and then another longer video with montages of us crazed crunchers as to why and how we do this World Community Grid thing being much more personal They would address the different audiences and the time they have spare on their hands If we could hone your script into the short and sweet presentation and then have it front onto the longer video we are onto a winner. Come on folks we need your input. My email address is hiding behind the envelope below my sig All feedback good or bad welcome we have broad shoulders. Also looking for additional hosts for the podcasts. If you have that fixed IP address on your broadband or you are lucky enough to have unlimited (by which I mean free) bandwidth by which to distribute the media we can share the load. I'm hoping and I'm sure Dagorath is too that it might be a bit popular on t'internet A project by the biggest potential committee on the planet Let's see if we can make this work using the medium of the forum and email from worldwide destinations and languages. A walk in the park Dave ![]() |

The podcast is certanly not for the faint of heart. It's not easy getting up in front of the world. Maybe when they see my ugly ol' puss and amateurish delivery on their screen they'll realise they can't do any worse and come forth with some input of their own. I think the format you described up a few posts allows for the podcast to grow over time. Give it time.
I shot the video I've submitted to Dave on my webcam, an expensive digital cam setup is definitely not required. |

Dagorath you are now broadcasting to the world.
----------------------------------------I have submitted you to iTUNES and as soon as it is approved as a feed I'll let you know. We are under Science and you should, as soon as they give it the all clear, be searchable on iTUNES. Then I'll get the feed onto all the other Podcast search engines tomorrow. Great Job In the meantime have a look here http://82.163.156.92/myonlinepodcast/dagorath.mp4 Dave ![]() |
