Re: Extended support for groups of 'unsophisticated' computer users

The only possible motivation to come here would be to help charity. The (main) problem WCG faces is the well-known one of getting people to contribute to charity – this process has to be as painless as possible or they simply won't join up.

The process IS as painless as possible. Your prospects simply have an incredibly low pain threshold. The system, as it exists, can't deal with them. That's unfortunate because I'm sure they probably all have Cray supercomputers. Oh dear, WCG will simply have to stumble along without them.

Outside the system there is something I can do for you. I will join your forum and pose as WCG's senior community advisor, the poohbah el grande. All I require in return for participating in this little white lie is that you change the name of your team to The Bawling Sissies.

Hey, Dagorath - play nice, now.

Baywhale's "prospects" are in fact signing up quite happily with a little help from Baywhale.

That's right. If WCG is not being marketed to the right people it is just stumbling along.

This is the same problem that affects every charity: 'How do you reach your target market?' I've explained as best as I can that the target market should be 'people with a computer' not 'people capable and motivated to use this forum'. It's not a question of being 'sissies'.

Re: Extended support for groups of 'unsophisticated' computer users

You're right, of course. But the vast majority of WCG members never even come near the forum. They just install and forget, exactly how it should be.

Just to give you some perspective: at User Friendly, where the audience is nearly all technically capable, the take up (at best) has been 0.0012% in a day and 0.072% in total. UF has a very large audience, but Team User Friendly only has 361 members at present. As you can see, even with the best possible recommendation, support and computing knowledge, not everyone can be persuaded to join.

Re: Extended support for groups of 'unsophisticated' computer users

Thanks for all your input, Didactylos. And thank for your vote of confidence in my own forum abilities! I suppose it's not that difficult to find the forum I'm talking about.

Although I can answer some questions it would be so much more effective to have a resident expert who already knows all the answers.

I don't expect everyone to be 'converted' to the WCG cause but from my test group I think the percentages could be quite high.

I think the idea of a joint captaincy is a good one (if that's possible on WCG?). If anyone is interested please join in the discussion – the role is a good opportunity to bring in new blood to WCG.

Re: Extended support for groups of 'unsophisticated' computer users

Baywhale, I extend my most sincere apologies for belittling you and your team. My intention was to get you a little angry and perhaps invoke a decision on your part to take the bull by the horns and twist him down all on your own just to spite ol' loud mouth Dagorath. It's obvious to me that you have the ability and the leadership skills.

I think in 1 month you will look back on this conversation and wonder why you were worried. Your team will take pride in knowing that it grew, on its own abilities, from humble origins into a solid team of producers second to none. And I hope you will be able to look back upon my harsh words and know they were intended to help rather than hurt.

Baywhale as you can see there are a lot of good friendly people with some great advice and a helping hand. Before long your team will find there way around the WCG forums. Also there are at anytime amny members who have a good grasp on a lot of areas to help out teams and individuals alike.
So don't get discouraged and keep on pushing towards a great team.
In time you'll have an outstanding team contributing to this great cause.
May your team keep growing, and may it get easier as you go!!
Good luck to you and your growing team!!!!!!!

Of course apology accepted, Dagorath. I'm working on it on my own for the time being, I think we're going to grow but very slowly.

Thanks everyone for the replies and the good luck wishes. No doubt I'll be back on this forum myself for all sorts of answers so get ready for my questions!

indeed and agreed. our little team is way up there with lots of results ! i have only recruited 2 people to wcg , it had been a slow process but i have another one in the pipeline waiting to buy a comuter , and another who really wants to join but "the household" wont let them do grid type stuff on their computers,

has been some cheeky comments , hmm cray computers LOL, well get a bunch together and we can easily outcrunch your average cray :) go team rah rah rah... keep up the good work, i share frustration at slow recruiters, i think their might need to be a critical mass for it to tkae off, way over 100,000 computers is a hell of a lot of puter power, would be nice to get much of the other 99% of wasted cpu cycles doing good for humanity.. i do agree that the setup is painless, i think it has heaps of pain, piece of cake for "super dooper tech people"

i have struggled over the last year or so at times, usualy ok but sometimes not, i have had to unistall a few times, experemented with ud mon had some probs there at times, ,

YAHOO You Always Have Other Options...
the eistein@home lot seem to have doubled their efficiency from a user help write more efficient code ( see new scientist magazine may issue!) hmm might even give grid projects a bit more advetising :)

there MUSt be other simple ways, how about emailing some work units to friends and they email results back ? then u send them to wcg then they dont have to deal with the grid paranoia (as much?) i dont know.. must be some other ways of harnessing unused cpu cycles ??

beyond me but good ideas must be around somewhere, meanwhile keep recruiting, slowly but surely,
