hi , i am in australia, a friend of mine in france ( who i met in saudi arabia!) tried out some fancy VNC (Virtual Network COmputing) stuff, ultra VNC etc,, ay way it seemed easy enough for him to checkout my desktop and play around but he could not set it up for the other way around, i struggled for a bit then realised that it is a PIECE of CAKE in MSN messeger, took zero time to setup cos is already a feature. (in msn instant messenger vers 7.5 at least) anyway all i had to do was click "remote assistance" and it then goes default to view only ( hmm good idea) then u can click "let remote take control" and Voila as the french would say... i have been waiting for months to go a few hrs drive to friends relos to get them setup on WCG, hmmi mighttry it this way... i did want to wait so i could be 1st but if this suggestion is useful then it would be remiss of me to hold back... ps i still want to be 1st but my shortage of friends and relos with availabe computers constrains me...
i would like to hear if anyone has done this.. i knwo there are techies out there who have done pretty much everything but this is for simple computer types like MOI.. i would like to setup remote view for my linux box instead of having to unplug the vga cable from one puter to another again nd again and again.. cheers my 2 windows computers are in separate rooms. it was real cool to see the other desktop and do some stuff while on puter in different room.. i guess by extension could be anywhere in there world |

Interesting discovery, retep57!
It's the first time I've ever heard of this using Messenger. Of course, they have probably been using this remote capability in a lot of high schools. I have been avoiding IM since an early problem with ICQ. feeling elderly - - Lawrence |

Indeed. The feature has always been there - it's just Terminal Services wrapped up in an easy to use form for Windows XP. And Messenger then made it even easier to launch.
Terminal Services is the normal way to remotely log in to Windows machines. The quickest way to solve your unplugging problem is to use a KVM switch. Otherwise, you need to setup SSH and an X server. |

thanx for comment, not sure how to setup the linux box with this ssh and x setrver thing but will look into it..
1st idea of my 1st post was to see that it is easy for windows users to help out others via remote assistance, i have only tried it once (today) ass an exercise, cool... i thought maybe could use it to setup wcg etc,,, iknow it is easy etc but some others may not want to bother and then u could do the fiddly things like join teams, set preferences etc etc... my linux is amd64 ubuntu might swap to suse 10 next but very happy with busy crunch box for now... cheers... it basicaly does nothing else so cable thing is no big deal cheers.. |

The idea's great - Remote Assistance can be very useful for this kind of thing.

I've used it a couple of times already with my brother. It works great, but make sure they know what there doing. If you give them control of your computer they can mess things up if they start playing in areas where they don't belong.
Great for fixxing problems if they aren't close by. |

I use x0vncserver on my linux boxes - it's not the most efficient cpu-wise - by itself it can push cpu usage to 70-80% on the host box (although only when it's being remotely monitored). I use this because it lets me see display:0 on the host machine. The overall time that I actuallly log in to these boxes to control them is minimal so the cpu hit during this time is no biggie. If my boxes weren't headless I would just run with boincview. HTH [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 17, 2006 6:41:11 AM] |

well there ya go , i actualy did it, talked a friend thru it, i am sure they prob would have figured it out anyway but with help via remote view in msn messenger i could point them in the right direction, and help them join our team, yeah.. at least it might be helpful to confirm things with someone who has done stuff b4, in this case join WCG ...
so vulture central III has a new member today cheers ![]() |
