"Speeding up" Boinc results

I am usually too busy working to look at my Boinc Manager. I have noticed that after completing a work unit (WIN XP Pro, not on a network) that sometimes a completed work unit will just "sit there" for some time while another work unit is being crunched.

Are my Boinc settings/options correct? I believe it is the default settings. Could it be changed to rectify this "waiting" process?

Sometimes I run my one Biz PC 24/7.

My Boinc Options

Re: "Speeding up" Boinc results

Well, your Connect to Network About Every x Days is set to 0.1. That should basically mean that your machine will crunch on a WU and, when done, upload it and get another one. You normally will only have one WU on your machine at a time. Boinc uses separate processes for uploading/downloading than for reporting results. However, with this valud at 0.1, your machine should be reporting completed results very shortly after uploading them. Assuming that you have network connectivity 24/7, I have to look to at your Do Work Only After Computer is Idle for x Minites being set to 3.0. That could introduce a delay, not only for reporting results but also for crunching them too. I'd set that to 0.

Re: "Speeding up" Boinc results

My computer will sometimes wait more than 3 hours before sending back a result. I have it set to Connect to network about every 0.1 days (2.4 hours) so I assume that it will never delay more than 4.8 hours. This seems peculiar to me, but if returning results is decoupled from receiving new work units, I can see how it happens.

Re: "Speeding up" Boinc results

The uploading and reporting results are two separate processes in BOINC. They access different databases.

There are a couple of criteria that BOINC uses to figure out when to take the second step.

Upload of the result is immediate.

This is from the BOINC Wiki. It is your friend for all things BOINC.

Ready to Report
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit]
General

This status indicator shows that a Result has finished and that all related data has been uploaded to the Data Server. This is the final status that will show in the BOINC Manager. After the Result has been reported it will be deleted from the local Host.

Results will be reported automatically at the following triggers:

1. New work is needed. Completed work will be reported at the same time.
2. The Deadline is less than 24 hours away.
3. The Result has been in the Ready to Report status longer than the Work Buffer setting.

Note: There is a bug in the 4.4x Versions of the BOINC Client Software that causes Results to be reported immediately after the status changes to Ready to Report.

Re: "Speeding up" Boinc results

Yes, it's not necessarily obvoius how that works. However, if you try to look at it from the other side - the receiving end - it helps. If every result got reported as soon as it was finished, your communication load would be some if not much higher. If your BOINC client can report any and all results it has ready to report at some sort of regular interval, that workload can be minimized allowing more resources for other tasks on the server receiving these reports. Keep in mind too that a user may be working on multiple projects. I'm not sure myself exactly how but I believe the approach used for reporting results takes that into consideration too.

Plus, if it really matters for some reason, you can always hit the Update button on the projects tab and force the result to be reported then.

This is from the BOINC Wiki. It is your friend for all things BOINC.

Sure it is. laughing

Anyways, the small change that I had made in my options/profile have not really made a difference yet. I find my self going to "Projects" and then having to manually do an "Update".

Perhaps the next version of Boinc may "fix" this.

Hi JC biggrin

You have Connect to Network About Every x Days set to 0.1 which as Lawrence has said = 2.4 hours.

I have mine set to 0.005 days which = 7 minutes. With this setting my results get sent back very quickly without resorting to manually updating - maybe give it a try?
