Ah, I'm going to get pulled over to the dark side it seems, no matter what I try
---------------------------------------- Okay, to make sure I have this right (and hopefully for the benefit of others who will want to do this), I currently have a shortcut in my Startup folder that starts BOINC Manager each time I boot up. It invokes "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe" so it sounds like I want to add another shortcut PRIOR to it in my Startup folder that invokes this: "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" -return_results_immediately so that would start the BOINC client (boinc.exe in task manager) with that option. When BOINC Manager starts after that, it sees that the BOINC client is already running and doesn't bother starting it. One question, in the same c:\Program Files\BOINC folder, there's a boinccmd.exe as well. That is apparently the command line interface version of BOINC. I don't need to be starting it instead of boinc.exe, right?Net is, once this is working, I'll have the BOINC client crunching away and automatically reporting results immediately after it uploads them, my Connect to Server setting will ensure that I have enough but not too much work to make sure I always have WUs to crunch on even during things like server/network/DSL outages (except in extreme cases of course). Also, my Connect to Server setting won't delay results being reported and thus possibly delaying reaching a quorum for validation. Sound right? |

I am usually too busy working to look at my Boinc Manager. I have noticed that after completing a work unit (WIN XP Pro, not on a network) that sometimes a completed work unit will just "sit there" for some time while another work unit is being crunched. I have noticed that sometimes it will not send anything for 1/2 hour or so. I'm not worried about it, since I have it set to store 2 days worth of pending workunits to cover any maintenance, server outages, etc. I have not watched continuously, since I am disconnecting and swapping out three computers on the same phone line, and want to see whether the others need anything. In the meantime, BOINC must not trust me to finish what I've got. I saw this in my message log this morning: Sending scheduler request... Reason: To fetch work Requesting 0.48527 seconds of new work

Are my Boinc settings/options correct? I believe it is the default settings. Could it be changed to rectify this "waiting" process? Use Truxoft BOINC from http://boinc.truxoft.com. It has an option to report results immediately and you set that option in a config file. That's much easier than starting BOINC from the command line with the report immediate parm and then starting BOINC manager later (though you might automate it in a .bat file, i suppose). Truxoft BOINC has other options you can spec in the config file, eg. task priority. |

Assuming that you have network connectivity 24/7, I have to look to at your Do Work Only After Computer is Idle for x Minites being set to 3.0. That could introduce a delay, not only for reporting results but also for crunching them too. I'd set that to 0. But his Do Work When Computer Is In Use option is set to Yes which means (according to the BOINC option setup at SETI) that the Do Work Only After Computer Is Idle For X Minutes value gets ignored. I assume that works the same for WCG as it does for SETI but perhaps I am mistaken. |
