Hello terminet3,
This site keeps track of distributed computer projrcts: http://distributedcomputing.info/index.html You might want to search Active Projects and Upcoming Projects for the Itanium, but I doubt that you will find much available. There are not many Itaniums for which to write distributed programs. Lawrence |

SETI@HOME is the only boinc based project, which has binaries for IA64 (HPUX and Linux). The binaries are available via the third party site : boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php |

In spite of SETI availability above, I saw another message elsewhere here that says that there would not be much efficiency difference at all if the programs currently used in these WCG projects were changed from 32 bits to 64 bits. Since there are other higher priority items like setting up new work, new operating system interfaces (non-PC) and new projects, that's where the effort is going. WCG just started a Mac OS X interface, which should help that side of things.
----------------------------------------In the meantime, the current projects work fine in the Win32 partition of a 64 bit operating system. If some new project in the future requires it or uses it as an option, I'm sure that 64 bit compatability would be considered at that time. I am finding that more points in general are obtained for the same effort by changing from the UD interface to BOINC, if you have a fast computer. If you have a true dual computer, BOINC is the only version that takes advantage of both cores simultaneously. The UD interface will only run on one side. You can still run BOINC or some other project on the other. I've got three AMD64s here myself, but am using the 32 bit WIN XP on them for now. Device drivers are still a bit iffy for the 64 bit version so I didn't go with it.

Since there are other higher priority items like setting up new work, Yes the perfomance increases depends on the application and on the platform. For example on SETI 4.x the 64 bit application was about 10 to 25 % faster compared with the 32 bit application. new operating system interfaces (non-PC) and new projects, that's where the effort is going. WCG just started a Mac OS X interface, which should help that side of things. Which ports for which platfrom are planed from the project ? In the meantime, the current projects work fine in the Win32 partition of a 64 bit operating system. If some new project in the future requires it or uses it as an option, I'm sure that 64 bit compatability would be considered at that time. IA64 (Itanium) is a seperate hardware platform and differs complete with the x86 and x86/64 bits... |
