Smaller multiple grids

I am a new user of this particular project. As a scientists I have the following question:

Will the world comunity grid support in the future a redistribution of the technology to other grids? Here's what I mean:
There are allot of smaller problems then the ones that are running on grid now, for example neutron transport using montecarlo in 3D. Currently I am running my laptop emachines M6810 for about 40 hours to get good statistics for my masters thesis simulation. The total number of runs which I must complete is about 50, so it takes rather a long time. It would be nice to have an activeX control that I could upload together with the Matlab code or the compiled code to a website that could run the code on may be 100 machines for 1 hour. Naturally i think there would be other researchers, who could benefit from such smaller grids.
So, having the knowledge of world comunity grid in the grid development, probably an activeX control can be developed which will allow its instalation on any website and this control would be coupled with a certain problem, that the scientists selects.
I am considering starting such a project on my own, but i would like to know if any one is already working on such a system.
Theoretically the component must do the followig tasks:

Download and install run time libraries (only 1st time)
Download the exe code
Download the Cross section data file
Execute the exe file
Monitor the output of exe file and upload it to the server

This can probably done easily, but to enspire users to partisipate in the project, manage user stats, forum etc, that is a job for an organization like world community grid.

Any thoughts, comments?

Re: Smaller multiple grids

For a mini-project like you describe, there are other alternatives. World Community Grid is really only effective for larger projects, since a lot of effort is required to port and test software before they will risk sending it out to many machines.

But for a small project, you can buy supercomputer time, or you can buy grid time. IBM have a grid, as do Sun.

Or, if you have the machines available, or you are prepared to recruit your own grid, you could configure BOINC yourself. I don't think it's trivial, though. This is close to what you describe, and works reliably for many small projects. Also, there are BOINC stats sites that will handle displaying the statistics for you.

Re: Smaller multiple grids

What follows is just a personal opinion and cannot be considered a response by the WCG or IBM; I am just a volunteer here and have no official capacity. That having been said…

While I am sure that your project is worthy, not everyone in the world would treat such a facility appropriately. Unfortunately there would be problems with the people that write virus code and Trojans as well as those that practice a sort of electronic graffiti.

The WCG goes to lengths to ensure that all projects are focused on solving problems to benefit humanity; Conducted by public or nonprofit organizations; Contributed to the public domain; and Accelerated by grid computing technology. You can find more about this HERE.

I wish you luck on your search and only wish that we lived in a world where a facility such as the one you describe could be provided without the issues of misuse and abuse.

Re: Smaller multiple grids

The University of Wisconsin at Madison maintains a local grid that can do what you ask. I suspect that a number of academic institutions have computer science research projects that can do this. The problem would be to gain access to the grid. I suspect that they are all booked up.
