Ok, I have the agent installed on four of my PCs. One of the four is a Hyper-Thread Intel chip, which allows the CPU to process two threads at a time. I've noticed that the Hyper-Thread CPU usage is only 50%, as with the other computers that can only process ONE thread at a time, run 100% CPU USAGE. The software needs to be updated to take advantage of Hyper Threading, or Multi-Core systems that can process more than one thread at a time. Processors such as the Intel Pentium D (OR EE chip which can process FOUR threads!) and the AMD Athlon X2.
If there was such an update, it would finish a calculation.. in theory.. twice as fast right? PLEASE update this software to take FULL ADVANTAGE of this new hardware!!! The results would be worth the effort of having to update the software!! Let's make this happen!!! God bless EVERYONE who is supporting this cause! J |

The UD client is single-threaded. The BOINC client allows you to run as many threads as you want to. But hyperthreading is usually no more than 15% faster than single threading (since there is only 1 FPU, it might not do as well with our floating point applications) and requires more real and virtual memory.

I totaly undersatand about the HT CPU. You still didn't mention the DUAL CORE CPUs that HAVE two FPUs. What about a Tyan MB with FOUR dual core AMD CPUs. That's EIGHT different CPUs! Eight Cores.... that's EIGHT FPUs! what about that? Just interested.......................

Run BOINC. You can even run it alongside the UD client if you wish.
----------------------------------------This is a bit wastefull on your PC memory resourses though. Either way you still get all your points allocated as usual. Lawrence is right about Hyper threading (Hype was the word). Its practical usefullness is limited with intense processing. Only dual cores can really process two threads independantly. Personally I would consider only crunching one unit at a time in a hyper threaded CPU. This then uses the slight advantage of Hyper threading to process your main PC tasks a little more responsively than a single thread CPU would do. I have a Pentium D and now run BOINC. Both processors are used to the full. BOINC can utilise up to 4 cores at the moment (this is configurable via the web page). Happy (dual) crunching. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dirk Gently at Mar 18, 2006 12:19:26 PM] |

THANKS! The BOINC agent is by far better than the one on this site. (Sorry to knock it) Now my HT system is running at a full 100%! Thanks again!

BOINC does seem the best option for dual processors, but the UD client is nice and simple for single processor machines. You also get your points allocated more quickly with UD, and you can choose projects individually for each machine.
----------------------------------------Please carry on crunching for WCG, and let us know how well the hyper threading processors perform with BOINC. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dirk Gently at Mar 20, 2006 7:47:32 AM] |

Why not actually fix the problem? Like write a new release? Outside of testing the code, adding support for 64bit OS and Multi-Cpu systems can be revamped outside of a day (beta version). Also we "end users" need full pause/unload button. If your any sort of gamer or high end user that has the decked out PC, we need to be able to free up our resources, espically memory to allow other programs to use them while in paused mode. Also that the screensaver does not activate when in paused mode. Please hear our voices, its simple enough to reboot the system to unload the memory and turn off the screen saver and not allow the program to start on PC boot up. But the happier the end users are, the more end users will; use & keep using UD.
Thanks in Advance.. |

Unfortunately, WCG can't do anything about it. The UD client is proprietary, and United Devices don't seem to be showing any interest in improving or fixing it. :-(
Move to BOINC.... WCG will be continuing to support both, I understand. |

WCG will be continuing to support both, I understand. I am running both programs on 7 comps with no problem-- one P4 is working 2 BOINC and one UD You need plenty of memory and larger paging file |
