just some friendly reflections here.........
when i refer people i usually give them a link to the home page. but i was just looking at the page and i think it could be less 'mysterious'. the page is beautiful and all, but seems to leave a reader in the dark. 1. why not start right away with the proteome/hiv work we're doing and how this works, instead of just a large vague "change the world"? or at least mix it up in there. sure i see the links at the bottom but first you have to get past all the 'hype'. 2. the second large part says 'donate your computer time' but is not clear to a reader how pro-active he would have to be. how about just a statement that 'your computer's extra energy will do all the work and your regular computer use will not be affected'. there is much open-end discussion on the page about 'joining the grid', which to some people may only remind them of the movie 'the matrix'. ![]() if anybody understands what i'm saying let me know ![]() |

It is very different. |

nice but still not as 'simple and upfront' enough as i would wish. maybe i'm not being too clear either.
it just seems to me that the homepage has too much general introduction, instead of a short and immediate explanation of a. exactly what we are doing right now b. how it works c. and that the computer will do all the work without interfering or spyware. on the side, about that climate project, is that the same school (oxford) that created such a disaster over at grid.org? ![]() |

Oxford isn't a "school". It is a university. Unlike the diploma-mills at places like Nowheresville, Kansas, research universities do considerably more than teach. I prefer Cambridge, but Oxford is still one of the world's leading universities, and is considerably larger than the single research project that messed up at grid.org.
The home page may not be perfect, but it does focus on the fact that WCG is more than a single project. It's rather clever, really. It compares the ease of use (and impact) to a screensaver, which is accurate (if somewhat disingenuous). It panders to the younger (and lazier) audience with a kids' introduction to grid computing. It lists the current research projects. It has prominent links to the sign up process. If you want someone to join on the strength of a single project, you should be pointing them to that single project's home page, which will also have a direct link to the WCG sign up page. If WCG did feature all current projects prominently on the home page, there would be several problems. First, it would be too cluttered. As projects get added, the home page would rapidly get out of control. And who would get top billing? More importantly, it would be mis-selling. WCG hosts many projects, and those projects will change over time. The current home page concentrates on the commonalities; on the humanitarian aspect. This is as it should be. |
