Re: BOINC Manager 5.2.13 on Windows Advanced Server 2000

As a clarification, the Window 2000 Advanced Server system had the UD software running on it.

Could there be a conflict that keeps the system from connecting with BOINC?

Should I unistall the UD software?

Does the BOINC 5.2.13 Manager include the appropriate Client software or do I need to install and connect to somethng else?

Sorry for the seemingly foolish questions. I just want to help the effort.

Al,

If you are wanting to utilize the BOINC software, you should uninstall the UD agent from your system. But this would not cause the BOINC system from connecting to our servers. If you could please copy and paste any warnings or erros that you are encountering. These should be viewable through the BOINC agent Messages tab.

Re: BOINC Manager 5.2.13 on Windows Advanced Server 2000

Uplinger - Thanks for the reply!

After the download and install of the BOINC Manager (now running)

I go to the File Menu and go to Select Computer
At the Select Computer Window I input the Hostname

At the Password I type in the 32 character Account Key I received from support@worldcommunitygrid.org (I've double checked this key is correct)

I get the error pop-up

"BOINC Manager - Connection Failed
BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client.
Would you like to try to connect again?
Yes No"

Trying again results in the same error message.

Not sure what I have done in error?

There are no messages. Should have said that before.

Re: BOINC Manager 5.2.13 on Windows Advanced Server 2000

Al,

I now know what your problem is. It is a simple mistake. When you are going to file->select computer, this is to connect to the boinc client that is on your computer. BOINC has a manager and a client. The manager is what you see at the moment and the client is the underlying program that actually does the work for your machine. There are reasons for this and I can explain if wanted but lets fix the problem at hand.

When you select a computer you'll need to point it to "localhost" without the quotes. your passphrase that is needed is located in C:\Program Files\BOINC\gui_rpc_auth.cfg file. (This is the default install directory)

Once connected, you should see "connected to localhost" in the bottom right of the BOINC manager window, you'll want to go to Projects -> Attach to Project. Once here you'll use the www.worldcommunitygrid.org and your account key (from the website: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProfile.do).

Hope this helps.

Re: BOINC Manager 5.2.13 on Windows Advanced Server 2000

Uplinger:

When I did the install I place BOINC on the f: partition in F:\Program Files\BOINC|.

There is a such file in in that folder as F:\Program Files\BOINC\gui_rpc_auth.cfg.

I did a search for gui_rpc*.* on my computer and get no results.

Any ideas?

Sorry for the trouble :-(

I even tried to uninstall and reinstall BOINC.

I don't know that this effects anything but I had tried to use the BOINC on my Mac to work on the worldcommunitygrid.org projects until I was told that the grid did not support Macs running BOINC. My Mac is now crunching for rosetta@home. Just wanted to be sure that was not the problem.

ahoover: as uplinger said, you simply don't need to touch the "select computer" option unless you are trying to manage multiple computers centrally.

If you are connected to localhost (by default, you should be) head straight for projects->attach to project.

Re: BOINC Manager 5.2.13 on Windows Advanced Server 2000

Didactylos:

Not connecting to "localhost" so I cannot connect to a project. The box on the bottom right of the BOINC window shows the Manager id "Disconnected"

Per Uplinger, I looked for the gui_rpc_auth.cfg to get the password but this file does not exist.

I should note that my "My Grid" Device Manager shows two devices:

1 is the UD client on my system DELLPRODUCTION
2 is a BOINC device which I'm not sure if this is my Mac which I tried unsucessfully of the PC Server.

????
