Does it run on Windows Server 2003?
I tried to install it, and it would take it forever to "connect to localhost", I had to kill it twice and give up on it. |

I don't know about BOINC, but I have the UD windows agent running as service on three different flavours of Windows Server 2003; Standard, SBE and Appliance.

Does it run on Windows Server 2003? Yes... quite well in fact. I've been running BOINC 5.2.13 for windows intel x86 on Windows 2003 Server X86 Standard and Enterprise Editions with SP1. All I've done after a fresh OS install is to update security patches, install antivirus and firewall app.. and disable the Internet Enhanced Security Configuration component. I had one system that for some reason wouldn't work with UD. It would have the infamous "agent paused" problem. It would connect, and then pause. I've since loaded BOINC on it and it's been running like a champ. I <3 BOINC. It's nice using 100% of ALL my processors in a system.  Do you have a firewall running? Even the built-in Windows firewall? It sounds like something is blocking local access. |

we do have a firewall running, but it is something like gateway/firewall configuration (dont know much about these things), so I dont think it should affect connection to localhost. I checked windows firewall, and it said that "Windows Firewall cannot run because the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing is not running". Can it be the reason? The fact that ICS is not running? Also, this particular computer has MS Exchange server running on it, and acts as a DHCP server for our little domain. Could that cause any problems? Thanks. |

If you haven't already, try to go into Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs / Add/Remove Windows Componets and disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.... I know that can cause problems with localhost applications. It's a new "feature" that's enabled by default on Windows 2003 Server. It's usually the first thing I disable.
More can be found about that feature at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815141 we do have a firewall running, Anything that can block localhost could be a problem. Depending on how a firewall is setup, it could cause a problem. I've also heard of some antivirus software cause problems with localhost. this particular computer has MS Exchange server running on it, and acts as a DHCP server Yikes! My... that is busy system. It's been a long time since I've done anything to my Windows 2003 Server DHCP server. It's possible that there is some way that could cause a problem. Can you ping the localhost from that server?.... either by going to a command prompt and typing: ping 127.0.0.1 or ping localhost You can also try a netstat from the command prompt and see if anything is showing on localhost. Sounds like you could be running Windows 2003 Small Business Server ? If you are, is it 'Standard' or 'Premium'? I don't know about 'Big Serverland', but on an SBS box ICS should not be running. (Internet connection sharing is handled by RRAS - Routing and remote access server.) Just from personal experiances, I had to stop running BOINC on my SBS server as while the processor has plenty of free cycles, too much memory was being used up. JMatthews, I disabled that thing you suggested, and I pinged localhost, and tried netstat. Ping was fine, and netstat gave me like a hundred lines. what am I supposed to look for? this PC is not actually that busy, there are only like 10 computers on DHCP server, and we use Exchange server for shared calendar only :). there is McAfee antivirus, but it is the same as on other 3 PC's I have BOINC on, and they are just fine. Any other things I could try? :) |

If Ping was fine and nothing was locked up on netstat... uhh... hmm
If you are running as a single or multiuser, try and go into the directory you installed BOINC to and manually start BOINC.EXE (the daemon). Then run the BOINCMGR.EXE (the manager). The Manager needs to have the daemon running. The only other thing I can think of is something is using the ports that BOINC needs. Usually it's a firewall, but since your system is running other software, perhaps something is grabbing the ports that BOINC needs. |

I know this isn't a perfect solution, but have you tried using the UD agent instead ????
(I found this ran fine on Windows Server 2003) |
