I don't know that much about computer systems. I don't have a dual chip system; will that make a difference? I.e., will I be able to multi-thread (I have a cheap e-Machine with a 2.6ghz Celeron processor). Note that I do not wish to divide my computational capacity among different projects; I want to devote 100% of its power to medical research, e.g., the WCG aids or human proteome project. Thanks for any info. Bill Velek That's the exact same situation I have. WCG is the ONLY DC project I am participating in. I only have one single device - a 1.5ghz CPU laptop. I joined the WCG pretty early on. Running the UD agent, I broke thru the 5000 rank back on 5/15/05. On 9/26/05, I broke thru the 4300 rank. That's about 19 days per each 100 spots. I got as high as 4209 and then started losing ground, mainly around the time that the Linux/BOINC client and FAAH on UD became available. At the time on 12/30/05 that I switched to BOINC, I had dropped to 4313. My average points per hour were always in the 24-25 range. Since switching to BOINC, I figure I am averaging over 50 points per hour. In 41 days, my average points per hour since joining WCG has risen to 27.86 despite over a year of UD crunching behind that. Today, I hit a rank of 3600 - 713 spots - in 41 days - about 6 days per 100 spots. I'm running my single little device basically 24/7 as I have been all along. IE, the thing of significance that changed is I switched from UD to BOINC. No, I can't promise you will see the same thing but I wouldn't be surprised if you did. I want to maximize what I can do to crunch as much as I can for WCG. Technically, you may not be able to compare UD and BOINC on an apples to apples basis. Given what I am seeing, I don't need no comparasion. |

Good morning guys.
Well, to begin with, I freely admit to being a BOINC sceptic. It appears to me to be far too complicated and cumbersome for the average Joe to follow. But, here is what I've found so far. It took forever to download all the required files to my 56k modem machine, and the connections setup can be a little difficult to get right with a 56k. I found that it connected automatically but did not disconnect when up/download had completed. The good news, it's possible for those with a dual processor or HT machine to run both versions at the same time. The bad news, BOINC is using quite a lot of RAM. However, as our friend keithhenry seems to be convinced that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, I have it running on two of my machines on a trial basis. I haven't uninstalled the standard version yet because I want it there if I decide to return to it. |

![]() Hi all, i just installed the BOINC client on 1 of my 3 PCs. In this case it is on a PIII Pentium mobile 1200Mhz, with 1 GB internal memory. Until now, this machine runs at approx. 28.6 points / hour. I'll let you know the result of the new client when it finishes. Till then, the fan keeps blowing.... Gerard |

Well, I tried, but couldn't manage to get BOINC working. This is what I did:
----------------------------------------1. I downloaded BOINC, version 5.2.13 for Windows, using Netscape 7.2 2. I ran a virus scan on it -- successfully 3. I shut down every program I had running except for Zone Alarm (firewall) 4. I shutdown and removed the client for World Community Grid, using Windows Remove Program agent 5. I ran 'Registry Cleaner', and then created a restore point 6. I attempted to load BOINC, but received the following error message: "Provides all t has encountered a problem and needs to close ..." (snip ... and the data this error report contains is as follows: AppName: boinc_5.2.13_windows_intelx86.exe AppVer: 10.1.0.238 ModName: kmw_dll.dll ModVer: 6.3.4.2 Offset: 00002fc8 etc.") 7. I shut down my computer, and then after restarting I kept only my ZoneAlarm firewall running and again attempted to install; same error message. 8. I reluctantly shut off my firewall and tried again; same error message. 9. I deleted the downloaded BOINC file, and loaded M.S. Internet Explorer and then downloaded the BOINC program again, thinking that Netscape might have messed it up. 10. Attempted installs again with and without connections to the Internet, and with and without my firewall running; same error every time. 11. I went to my Internet Security Panel and lowered my security settings to their lowest, and with my firewall disabled the installation again failed. 12. I then went back to my restore point, reloaded WCG, and resumed running the regular client for WCG. I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong. I'm running WindowsXP with all current updates, on a 2.6ghz system with a Celeron processor, 512mb RAM, 240gb HD. I'm sure it should work. The error message, above, made me wonder if my system is missing that .dll file, but I did a search and found it in my systems folder -- with a modification date of 1/19/2004 at 1:44 PM, so I don't know if that has been modified since then. I don't know enough about computers to know if that is what the problem is or how to fix it. I don't mind working on my system, but I wasted time that I could have been crunching with the regular WCG client. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Well, to be fair, I don't pick up the electricity bill, but my employer (IBM) does. I work at a testing facility that has a lot of hardware that is frequently used for testing (but not always). So when it is not used for testing, I put it to good use to run the WCG agent (in accordance with company policy). What I do put in is the effort to install the agent time after time, since the tests wipe all previously installed software and the WCG agent can not (yet) be installed in an automated fashion (unattended install). It is sometimes time consuming and quite tedious to reinstall it on a hunderd PC's. So, I do not invest my money, just my spare time ...

Bill Velek I did a complete search of all files on my machine and did not find a dll by that name anywhere, including the BOINC directory. This supports the other response you got on your post as well. |
