Keith --

I wanted to let you know that until now, I have been hesitant to install BOINC for Windows, but reading your posts about it here and in the team forum, I decided to give it a go. After I completed a work unit on this system a few minutes ago, I removed the UD World Community Grid installation from my system. I then downloaded BOINC for Windows from the BOINC Download Site. After the download, the rest was easy. I ran the instaler and pointed to the World Community Grid at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org as the project and launched it. When it came up, it asked me for the BOINC Account Key which I found on my Profile Page and all is happy. It was much easier than I had expected. I do miss the UD Agent window, but I am sure that I will get used to the BOINC Manager after a while. Thanks for convincing me to give it a shot.

What is the advantage to switching? Does the software run faster? If so, why doesn't WCG upgrade their program? Or is it just that you have the option to select more types of research?

Thanks.

I believe that's what the WCG folks did when they started working with BOINC. That gave you the ability to crunch on Linux, not just Windows. BOINC also allows you to also crunch for other DC projects besides WCG at the same time. BOINC can also continue to run when your machine is not on AC power - very handy for mobile crunchers. As to whether it is faster, I've never been able to get specific numbers or find a viable apples to apples comparasion. However, my own personal experience is that it appears to have doubled my throughput as defined by average points per hour. Best I have been able to determine - the UD agent is single threaded and BOINC is multi-threaded. My conclusion is that BOINC is a more efficient cruncher.

I don't know that much about computer systems. I don't have a dual chip system; will that make a difference? I.e., will I be able to multi-thread (I have a cheap e-Machine with a 2.6ghz Celeron processor). Note that I do not wish to divide my computational capacity among different projects; I want to devote 100% of its power to medical research, e.g., the WCG aids or human proteome project.

Thanks for any info.

Hi Guys

sad Old Rocker missed his Certificate tonight by 46 points
smile I am sure he will be happy to celebrate tomorrow

Old Rocker 11/19/2004 0:168:15:44:05 99,954 432

Climbers of the day
keithhenry up 8 places
blckw up 4 places

Another consistant day

I cant begin to tell you all, what a difference switching over to BOINC makes
It only takes 5 minutes to remove your UD Agent and install the BOINC Agent

smile Benefit = Twice as many points for the same amount of crunching

biggrin Come on Guys, get installing and lets boost our points, to start posting over 300,000 points per day again
