Azkar it looks like this thread hasn't been in vain. We may have seen the back of the Killer WU! This will likely never be the case due to the nature of the calculation. The best we can do is reduce the average time a workunit will take. There will still be workunits that will take days to finish. The link you pointed to is a good explaination of why that is. Over the last couple of days the work units seem to be of a more manageable size. You've just been lucky. We haven't posted any smaller workunits yet. Thanks to everyone in this thread for their input. Yes indeed. Tuning the workunits was always a part of the plan from day one. We just needed to accumulate enough information for statistical purposes and tune accordingly, whether anyone mentioned it or not.

lets see...
currently 147hours, 25min, and 35 seconds for one workload! its 94% done. thats about 1% every 1.5 hours.. i know my computer is slow, but i wish the workloads would go faster. |

I think i am the most unfortunate, because i have been calculating a work unit for 41 hours, but only finished 48% of the work. The calculation machine is a server with double P4 2.4G CPUs and 2G memory. I am afraid the machine can't finish this work unit within 100 hours. How terrible it is!

And we "flash forward" almost one year later.
----------------------------------------![]() Not to sound disrespectful, but is the reason we are all getting these monster work units because of all the new Teams joining here? ![]() Is WCG unable to handle all the traffic? And I know this may sound crazy, but are more servers needed or better database tuning/triggers or such? It would be nice to be able to send in at least one result per day. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by Johnny Cool at Dec 4, 2005 12:49:22 AM] |

Typically these users want to download WUs that take a short time to download, but take a long time to process (x days). This way they don't have to occupy their phone line for a long time to download a WU, as well as they don't have to connect to the internet many times a day to send results to the server. Is it possible to compress WUs of this type.
Just a thought. Thanks. |
