sad Severe error in Windows Client causing system crash of Windows XP

hello friends,
I downloaded and installed the new Windows client on 23.01.2006.
I run Windows XP pro SP2, 512MB RAM and had no stability problems with all kinds of software until yesterday.

When I first tried the computation started but I was not able to stop it any more. If I right-clicked with my mouse on the shortcut button there was no reaction, I did not see the usual window for opening, full-size and termination. I could not stop it.

Even by using the Windows Task manager to delete the process I noticed that the process started itself for new some seconds later. So I shut down Windows and noticed that it was unable to restart. The original software client must have a severe programming error which took me about 3 hours to re-establish Windows using the emergency console. I had never such a problem in any of my software over 1 year.

So if I want to contribute for AIDS@home I have to use BOINC since that is the only client that works securely on my Windows.

Please have a check on array-bounding or buffer overrun in your program.

thanks
Dr.Mabuse (Dr.med.Joachim Elz-Fianda)

As that happens to be the very same day that the Windows client was refreshed, I have to wonder about the possibility that what you downloaded was a mix of the old and new. I would expect however, that you would be locked out of the website that you download the WCG UD agent from based on what I see with other parts of the WCG website. Normally, once you have the UD agent running, any updates to it get downloaded the next time you get a new WU. In your case, it looks like you were doing your inital download of it. Hopefully, one of the WCG techs will weigh in on your problem as this would not be the first time my "wondering" would be all wet smile

Re: Severe error in Windows Client causing system crash of Windows XP

Hello Dr_Mabuse,
You ran into two different problems. First, something went wrong during your installation or during the run. I do not know whether a bit got switched or if your computer was in a peculiar state, but that is not what happened to other people. It is always hard to diagnose a unique problem like that. It sounds as though something scrambled your OS, which caused your reboot problem.

The second problem I do understand. When you use Task Manager, you have to kill UD.exe first. If you kill the application program (WCGrid_AutoDock.exe) then UD.exe assumes that something went wrong, sends a crash message back to the server, and downloads a new Work Unit AND a new copy of WCGrid_AutoDock, in case the fault was caused by a corrupt copy in the application.
