Hello,
I hope someone can answer my question. My system drive has crashed en i had to reinstall from a image. I did make a copy of my WCG folder of an earlier date than the crash. So, can i put back the older version even thou i completed more units after the backup? And still run under the same device id? P.s. I'm Dutch so forgive my grammar Neelix99 |

I'm no expert, but AFAICT you should be able to restore it (although of course, you don't have to). The client will either pick up where it left off, or get a fresh work unit.

I am interested to know the answer from your questions but so far the questions are unanswered. I have a related issue which I will add on top of your original queries: How does one delete the old device/agent after a reinstall was done? I once had a crash and after a reinstall and using the same device name/ device id, I get two (2) independent device name/device id. In other words, how does one eliminate the 'phantom' device from showing under one's Device Manager webpage? ; |

Hello andzgrid,
Each installation of the software creates a unique id number stored in the WCG directory with a corresponding 'device' entry in your member account on the server. The old device entries on the server vanish after 14 days without a result returned unless you change that value in the drop down menu. You can select 3 days, for example, or 7 days. The server will always remember your old installations. You can always restore the WCG directory from a backup. This will use the device on the server with the corresponding unique installation id number. mycrofth |

If you restore your World Community Grid directory, this may work. If the save was from more than 3 weeks earlier, it should instantly timeout the restored work unit and get a new work unit from the server. I have not verified that this will work correctly, however. It may be possible that the servers will see that this looks like a clone install (because some results were returned after the original save) and cause your agent to force a re-registration as a new device id. This process requires human intervention on the agent's machine. Clone installs can also cause wasted workunit processing until the server recognizes them as a clone and resets them, forcing a new registration.

Thanks for responding. I forgot to point out one small detail during my original post: the thing is, the count of the number of device agents as displayed in the Device Manager is not the same as those displayed under the statistics in the "My Stats" webpage. I have one more in the My Stats webpage than those in the Device Manager webpage. Thus, the original query would now instead be: How does one reconcile the difference, if any, in the number of device installations reflected in the Device Manager on one hand versus the stats under the My Stats on the other hand? Or, in a way, what I meant was: How does one get hold of the 'phantom' device in a way as to effect in the system to target the 'phantom' device for termination? (a.k.a Terminator style) |

Hello andzgrid,
With our current software, a device can be visible or invisible, but it is never deleted and always shows in your total number of devices. Someday, something might be done about that, but it is not trivial to keep complete records and at the same time make a device disappear. Considering all that needs to be done, I do not expect a fix for this situation to appear in the near future. Invisible is as good as we can do for right now. mycrofth |

OK, I guess I can live with it. But, standing uncorrected, I can crank up the count of device installations under my My Stats webpage with every re-install of the UD agent and up to a point, this may introduce some distortions. In any case, I thought the correction would involve only a few lines of code. The logic is quite straightforward: 1. For any given cruincher data for the UD agent, compare the count in the Device Manager versus that in the My Stats. 2. If there is a difference, overwrite the number in the My Stats. Well, well. I guess that is it for this thread. Thanks again mycroft. I'll be around....crunching. |

andzgrid,
I wish it were that simple. However, both of the stats that you speak of are not just numbers that are stored in the database. They are actually calculated from the database records. The Device Manager page doesn't know how many devices to show as a specific number. In only knows to show all devices that have returned a result in the last 14 days (or whatever the dropdown is set to). The My Stats page does a count of the number of devices that are in the database for a given member. That count is generated dynamically so the data is not actually stored anywhere. We are working on a strategy for eliminating the old devices that are no longer returning results, but it's more complicated than you might think (and than I originally thought when I started working on this project last year). |

Thanx for your input.
After more than a month, i finaly got the system running again. Still need a new disk!! I've reinstalled the WCG. Clicked the login screen away. Copied the backup over the new install. And started UD. It seem to be fine at first. it started running where it left of. But after a few minutes It prepered it self for sending. This took a while so i lost track for a moment. Next i see is the login screen. Well i registered as an existing user with the same computername. But it still registered as a new device. Too bad Well lets see what happens when it finishes a packet. I'll let you know |
