I donate computer time and personal time managing my many UD installs. I've even bought the XP Resource Kit to run UD as a service. But I can't justify buying a compiler to build BOINC so my new dual core machines are better used.
Are there any (virus/spyware-free) pre-compiled Windows binaries available? And are there any clear BOINC setup/management instructions for non-Unix users like myself? It's sad to see brand new Intel dual core machines running at 50% and scoring worse than year-old Athlon 64's. Thanks in advance. |

Have you downloaded the installers from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php yet?
I'm assuming this is what you're after. |

Look HERE for instructions on how to convert UD machines to BOINC machines. You can choose, during the install, whether or not you wish the BOINC agent to run as a service.
----------------------------------------In order to run your dual-core machines full speed, you will need to set the number of CPUs in your BOINC profile to 2. (you will be able to see that BOINC profile after you install) Good Luck and let us know if you have any questions. |

Thanks Lazy Slug. Sorry for my RTFM slip; I somehow only found the source code page.
RT, thanks, that was my next question. I want to convert these half-preforming UD dual core machines to BOINC, so I'll read the instructions. Thanks again. |

Actually, my next question is:
Can I migrate from UD to BIONC and keep the same device entry on the WCG site? In other words, if the machine crunched 10 results with UD, can it continue adding to those stats as a BIONC machine? I'm sure the answer will be "no, each device is unique", but I'd hate to have "retired devices" lying around in my stats. Thanks. |

A device is a particular installation on a computer, so you will end up with more devices. After 2 weeks they will no longer be visible, unless you use the drop down menu to see old devices.

I am with you...it would be nice to be able to do that. Unfortunately it is not possible currently.
----------------------------------------I went into my Device Profile in the UD section and renamed the "Devices" from names like "Betty" to "BettyUD" and named the new BOINC Device "Betty". That helps me keep them straight. In a couple of weeks the old devices "....UD" will roll off the page when you look at device statistics. One final note: Be careful when you name BOINC devices; Once you have given it a name, it cannot be changed... at least with the current version of the software. Kind Regards... I love these dual-core machines ![]() |
